I have a 1948 model "G" with plow, sickle-bar cutter, and snow plow. It was running, but has not been run or used for several years. Paint and body work are not pristine. I'm considering selling it but don't know how to price it. Can anyone suggest a good way to go about pricing and selling it? I noticed a posting on this forum which reported that at a recent auction a "G" sold for $3,050 (new paint, far from perfect bodywork). Thanks for any help you can provide.

That's about what they go for around here if they run and have all the parts.

The universal answer to all questions is yes, how much do you want to spend?

At an auction in central Wisconsin this summer six "G's' sold for from $2100 to $3400. Thay all had one implement or another, some had hydraulics.

Around the country it seems the price on ebay is closer to 5 grand. I'd ask close to that if it runs ok. You can always come down, hard to go up.

5k is alot for a G that isnt restored. I know of probably 5 or 6 locally ranging from 2500 for ones that run, have cults or something like that on them but arent restored, to 5k restored.....the markets down on everything. I'm not knocking the tractor as I have no interest in a G, ever....just dont like the little things. Just my opinion on the question at hand.

As others have said , condition and location are key factors. To me any nonrunning tractor is only worth scrap+10% as I do not know what is wrong with it(engine, clutch, trannies, hydraulics, etc) so it's a gamble and monies not exactly falling off trees around here.
I've had one real nice G that I sold well below 'market price'(tight, fresh rebuilt engine, total strip and paint, skid of implements....),the 2 I have now might make 1 if I lock myself in the garage for the next year or so....
I'd spend some time and get her running,it'll fetch a LOT more.
Other factors are tire condition, any oil leaks, does everything move, super low 1st gear, starter and generator work ? Again most of these would be answered in a running tractor.Good starters are scarer than hen's teeth, generator's cost $100 to rebuild, rear tire are pricey.Rust doesn't bother me but any drivetrain problems will cost a lot of $$$.
Without more details or pictures I'd offer $1,000 and rold the dice(if the 'bank' allowed !).
ps.there's one up here offered at $3900,has mower and cultivators,very oily engine,no muffler,steering box oily,soso overall...2nd time up for sale....to me it's a $1500 MAX purchase.

Where do you think is the best place to post my tractor for sale?

The best place to post it for sale would be either under the classifieds, or ebay because, I've seen several G's go on there for a pretty penny.

Three Thousand seems about right around here for a running G. Implements will help. The fact that it has not run in several years will have a definite effect on the price. Perhaps around $ 2500 in Maryland.
Good Luck! Bill Long |
