I'm building a 1936 WC for pulling and I'm worried about being able to steer using the hand brakes. I've seen a conversion kit for a WC but I've not been able to locate one. Can foot brakes off of later models be adapted to the old flat fronts?

It only takes four hands to operate a WC........left brake.....right brake......steering wheel.....throttle lever (if the teeth won't hold the lever where you want it).

Not really. You can home brew something, but you need a linkage from the foot pedal to the hand lever to operate it. I'm thinking you steer with your knee, left brake, right brake. Back bevel the throttle notches with a file so it'll stay in the GO position. Occasionally I'll see a kit come up for sale, just have to watch for them.

This is totally off the subject but it reminds me of the first time I was allowed to load cow manure out of a pile with my uncles WC. I was about 12 and the ground sloped (quite steep) away from the barn and manure pile, toward the spreader. Of course the loader was a hand trip and I could barely pull the trip with both hands. On my second load I ran into the side of the spreader, which ended my loading career for a while.
I forgot to add the brakes didn't grab very well and the tractor steered very hard, especially if you happened to get the bucket good and full. A man could have used about 8 hands to load with that tractor!!! Sorry for the rant! |

I think that hand brakes on the WC is an advantage. When I'm pulling the hand brakes just seem to be more instinctive than any tractor that I've pulled with footbrakes...by the time that the front end starts floating I'm usually at full throttle so my hands have nothing else to do!

I think what I'll do is add a extension on the left hand side so I can reach it from the seat easily and then give it a try in this springs pulls. May not be the problem I anticipate. Thanks, Dave

When I was a young kid, my first tractor driving jobs were on my uncle's WC and my grandfather's WF (which I now own). Of course both had hand brakes. It took me a while to get used to foot brakes on the "big tractors" (WD & WD-45).
One place I do not like hand brakes is loading a tractor on a trailer or truck. I bet you adapt in a hurry. |

Put an ad in the classifieds. AC made an extension for the hand brake levers when using a cultivator. You could home brew one too if you so desire.

I refer to those lever extensions as the "Power Brake" option.

at our local pulls you must have a hand on the steering wheel at all times, SO....... when pulling my 36 WC i hook my left arm through the steering wheel spokes and use it to control the right brake and made a special bent adaptor to control the left brake with my right arm. sounds complicated but it works for me. I pull in the 3 1/2 mph class so Im not going boogity boogity down the track
