Ok, I’m trying to rebuild my TRW turbo on my 190XT. This is the first turbo that I’ve tried to rebuild I’ve read the service manual several times. I’ve also got both turbos torn down. I noticed a few posts back someone on here said that you need to have them balanced. And today I was at the Diesel shop that I’ve been dealing with; they do a lot of custom pumps and turbos for pullers, asked him about balancing. He told me as long as I mark the compressor and turbine wheels before I take it apart and I don’t change either wheel I don’t need to balance it. Of course the manual didn’t say anything about marking the wheels or about balancing the turbo. I’ve read on the internet (I don’t believe everything on the net) that a turbo can be balanced as a unit or the compressor and turbine separately, and this can be told by the turbine nut if it has been ground on the assembly was balanced. If the nut hasn’t been ground on the wheels was balanced separately so you don’t have to keep them aligned. Am Sorry about the long post but it was needed to understand where I was coming from. My TRW is the later one that the compressor wheel don’t press on, how do you hold the compressor wheel in alignment with the turbine while you tighten the nut and don’t mess up the fins? Also the nut on my turbos don’t have any grinding done on it, do I need to have it balanced as long as I use the wheels out of the same turbo?

Have it balanced when you get the center section (bearing housing) back together. That's how we do it at my work. We used to do all of general motor turbos.

Bryan where did you Your turbos to to get balanced? The ones I found on a google search just want the rotating parts, and the diesel shop also said just bring in the compressor wheel and turbine.

The TRW I had apart off of my D19 had material cut off the edge of the fins in various places. I assume this was for balance.

How is the housing surface where the seal rides on the turbine (exhaust) side? I've torn apart two to rebuild and the housing was worn beyond repair on both of them.

Have you priced a rebuild kit? I finally found one with a good housing but the rebuild kit was going to cost me $525. I ended up ordering a new one from A&I for around $400.

A far as holding the shaft when you tighten the nut, use a shop rag and hold the turbine with your hand to keep it from spinning.

Don't wory about balance on that turbo. There is no way to keep the wheel lined with shaft when it is torqued down. There are some turbos out there the wheel screws on to shaft.
I have had turbos keyed and balanced but never lasted any longer than one out of the box.   MACK

I have a the later style. and the kit that I priced was $231. Does your's have one or two piston type rings on the exhuast side? Is the A&I turbo a direct replacement for the TRW or will you also have expence in the plumbing of the turbo?

Thanks Mack, that was kind of what I was thinking but wanted another opinion.

Both I've torn down had one piston type ring. One I tore down came off my D19. The other came off a 190XT. Both were the later style.

The new A&I turbo is going to require some plumbing modification on the D19 I've been told (it hasn't came in yet so I haven't laid my eyes on it). I'm pretty sure it's a direct bolt on with the 190XT.

That's a great price on a complete kit. Where is if from? I just priced turbine and compressor hosing gaskets for another TRW I had and it was going to be about $120 just for those two gaskets.

On my search for a turbo for my D19, I've ended up with 2 TRW turbos, a Rajay, and 2 Air Research. All with various problems. In the end I found it cheaper to just buy a new turbo than to try and fix one of these old, obsolete turbos.

I've got two good TRW wheels and a good shaft if you need them.

The kit I priced was from Show-me Diesel in Columbia MO. I deal with them and Hartz Diesel in Fayette MO.

We do all the balancing here at the plant. I'm with Mack, I wouldn't bother trying to get it balanced.
