I removed the sump housing from the bottom of the torque housing on my 190 xt. Can someone tell me what two gears I'm looking at when I look straight up into the housing. One gear has no teeth left on it and the other is badly chipped. I have tried going onto the agco site to look at manuals and diagrams but it's not allowing me to see the parts book. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like the intermediate shaft. Drives the PTO.

To do any repairs to that area, will require a split of the rear end being rolled back away from the middle section. It will split right under the platform where your hydraulic dipstick is located. There is a total of 5 gears in that area and all may have damage. It takes some tooling to work on it. The PTO box probably has to be dropped down.

Thanks, I have a good repair manual and this will be the project before all others I guess. Just gonna have to wait for room in the back corner of repair shop to open up. A person I contacted told me he has the complete torque housing with internals for 200.00. But he said it's out of a 190 but he doesn't know if it was an xt. Would be nice if it was the same.

Bought the tractor a few years ago with fresh overhaul at an auction. I have been plowing and pulling a 310 green disc with it, and not just fluffing up the top if ya know what I mean. It's a good tractor and it's fun and comfortable to drive. Lots of room on the platform. It's worth it to me. And it sounds better than the 1066 when ya got her pulling with that big ole straight pipe. Radio ain't much use though. Lol

To the OP, what made you inclined to  pull the "sump" ? Just curious, as we've never done this on our XT Approve .
We've run it since 1985, second owner Wink

Easier to pull gears out of the donor housing and transplant into your housing, than change out the whole torque tube, especially if there's a cab to deal with.

Tractor acted as if it was stuck in two gears while brush hogging. Power director did nothing in any position. It would stall the tractor if I left the clutch out. Pulled the sump to check the screen which is in there. Had a one inch tall pile of teeth in the screen.

Dr Allis, would you know if the 190 and the 190xt have the same torque housing? If so, I'll probably take a road trip and pick the one up for 200.00 if it fits.

Yes. They are the same, assuming they are in the same serial number range.  Both torque tubes need to be from s/n 9001 up to s/n 30,222. Very late model parts above 30,222 have to also go into another torque tube of s/n 30,222 and up. Serial numbers located vertically on the left side of the bellhousing. This is if you intend to swap internal parts from one hsg into another. Complete housings directly interchange above s/n 9001.

So, yours is one of those early models that was supposed to have had all these gears and everything in the transmission/rear end replaced with updated parts.  I hope it got done and it will be interesting to see what happened. Getting into the "intermediate gears" for a failure isn't an everyday occurrence. When updated to the newer (s/n 9001 and up) parts, your transmission shift pattern was 1 - 2......3 - 4...….5 - 6...…..7 - 8.    Old weak parts were 1-2....3-5......4-6...….7-8.

Boy hopefully it was one of them that got the updates completed. I sure enjoy using this tractor and it's really worth fixing to me. I'm gonna make a road trip and get the other housing if he still has it.

DrAllis, the serial number on the donor tractor is 190 9995 DXT and my tractor is 190 7229 DXT. Are they compatible? Thanks, John

They SHOULD be. The donor is above s/n 9001, so it had the newest parts from the factory. Your tractor is before s/n 9001 and SHOULD have been updated with the same parts by the selling dealership back in 1966 or so.

Thank you sir. I'll get the donor and get ready as soon as I get garage floor space. I'm going to go through the power director and pto while I'm at it. Thanks again, John
