I am looking at a early model 190xt that is jumping out of 2nd gear. What is this gonna look like to fix? Does the tractor require splitting and tranny rebuilding. Otherwise the tractor looks really good, but I dont need another heavy "fixer upper". We had an 185 that occasionally jumped out of third, I remmber my Dad taking off the top cover, bending the fork a bit and putting it back together, it would work for a year or so, then he would have to do it again...He seemed satidfied, but I wouldnt be...Thanks in advance for any advice, Trev.

having just fixed my gear jumper i can say this.  If you are not doing this yourself  it will be expensive.   if you do it,  it is a lot of work, not really hard, just a lot to do.  You have to split at front of tranny, remove axles, bullgears, pinions, differential and pinion which is transmission main shaft.  you slide out the pinion to replace the gears as they are all on it.  I did not have to remove my counter shaft, all was well.  I spent about $1000, with aftermarket gears from A&I and every seal and gasket and o-ring on the rear housing replaced from AGCO.

Treavman if the price is right on it , theres a few different ways to make a device to hold it in gear , the best one ive seen is a door hinge that falls behind the shift lever when put into that slot , he had a foot lever to tip it back up ,

that is only a bandaid, it will get worse, and your only grinding off your shift fork.

i should mention that when i did mine i replaced:  input shaft, 3rd gear and shift coller, 2nd gear, sliding gear and reverse gear.  i could have probably been ok with 2nd but i didnt want to take any chances since i was already there.  it was a loader tractor and had a lot of trans abuse.  to just do one gear your looking at about 400$ if you use after market gear and all new gaskets and seals in rear from AGCO. AGCO gears are REALLY high

it is a lot of work but i know everything is in good shape

Asking price is 3200, says negotiable. Id say it had a loader on it. Looks like it has 23.1-34 rears at 30%.  The tractor has a cab and new turbo. Has front weights, looks really good otherwise. Owner was forthcoming about the gear jumping when asked. I am not desperate for a tractor and I trust you guys when it comes to "surgery". I'm still thinking pass. I appreciate all replies, thanks, Trev.

Mine is a recovered gear jumper.  I had my mechanic neighbor fix it while I bought the parts.  It seems there are a number of factors that cause it to jump out.  Either way, it is quite involved.  However, it does work great now that it is fixed up!

I thought I read an old dealer service bulletin from the early 1970's once that talked about "torque lock" gears and shift collars to use in place of the original gears. Was I dreaming or misunderstanding what I read? This was at the auction of Don Peterson near Blooming Prairie MN some years ago after he died. There was a hay rack full of old manuals and this bulletin was in the mix somewhere. Maybe someone here can tell me what that bulletin was all about. DrAllis, Mack? Someone else?
