    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 at 5:26pm
Hi, first time here, first time AC owner.  Bought a 185 a couple months back.  I have noticed the batteries would be dead sometimes, I put it on a charger, charged them up, and never thought much about it.  In a quest to figure out where to tie in an aux 12v power supply for my round baler computer, I pulled the dash cover off and found what you might guess of a 40 year old tractor, complete with mummified rat.  Not too much damage, although the green wire that goes from the #1 terminal of the VR to the Field terminal on the generator was eaten, and fully severed.  Unfortunately it's pretty close to the plug that connects to the VR so might have to replace the whole connector.  I see in the wiring diagram there is supposed to be a ground (black wire) that connects the ground terminal of the generator to the ground lead of the VR.  There is a stray black wire floating around back there not connected to anything, and I'm assuming that's the one that's supposed to connect to the VR.  Here's my question: where does it connect on the VR?  The wire has a little U-shaped end on it, but I don't see any obvious places where it might connect.

Second question: Where's a good place to tie in the aux power outlet for my bailer?  I was trying to track down a blue wire with white stripe that the manual says comes out of the back of the light switch and can be attached to an aux outlet if desired.  I was thinking I would tie into that.  Or should I just run some leads straight from the battery (which I'm guessing won't work if my VR isn't even connected because the batts aren't receiving any charge).

I'm fairly adept at figuring things out but electrics are pretty new to me so excuse my ignorance! Thanks!

Ground wire goes to one of the mounting bolts on the volt reg base. Get your power from the battery or battery terminal on the starter solenoid, not the light switch.

Thanks for the insight!  One more question, do I need to polarize the generator if all I did was connect the negative battery lead and unplug the wiring harness from the voltage regulator?  There seems to be several different ways to do that, and none of them make sense for the generator on my tractor, which has no A terminal.  Just Batt, Field, and Ground. It's a 12v negative ground system, pretty sure its all stock. Any advice here would be helpful too!  Thanks!

No need to polarize it.           MACK

You have an alternator. It doesn't need to be polarized.

Put an in line fuse in the positive AND negative wire from your battery to your baler computer, as close to the battery as possible...it is much cheaper to replace that fuse rather than your computer for the baler if (when) something goes wrong...or the entire tractor when the rat eats the wire and it shorts out and the tractor catches fire...

Alright, thanks everyone!  Good advice Amos, I was planning on putting an inline fuse on the positive side but I'll do both for safety sake.  Happy tractoring.
