So, when we had the hood off the 185 something happened and now I've got a clicking noise. It's coming from what looks like a voltage regulator. I didn't think an alternator needed one? I took the cover off, yep, that's where the noise is from. The one solenoid is pulling in three or four times a second. No idea what would have effected this that would make this happen.
Ideas?
Change it out?
Electricity is not my strong suit.

That alternator needs a regulator. Has to be a ground wire on it going to the alternator. If alternator is working, the regulator is working. 1970's GMotors regulators.

The coil will pull IN and OUT as it adjusts the charge voltage and current from the alternator.. Maybe cycling a little faster than it use to or a loose bolt on hood / bracket is making it echo and sound louder now than before ?  As Dr said, look at the gauge or check battery charge rate to see if things are OK.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Should have a black wire from the one mounting bolt on regulator to stud on back of alternator just pushes on stud

An extra ground wire from the tractor body to the base of the voltage regulator may cure the problem. The remote mounted regulator may not be getting a good enough ground through the sheet metal.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

Turns out it was indeed the ground wire. Figured it had to be something that got disturbed fixing the hood.

Thanks for the help. Got the old girl out and went for a brief ride, sounds really good with the new muffler.
