Everything that I read the serial number is on the right Side down the bell housing however mind in on the left side like a 180. Serial number reads 185 1281 D I think it makes it and 1970 model. Is it possible the first run of production was stamped on the left side like the 180?

Can't say I've ever kept track of where every single 185 serial number is stamped, but yours isn't anything special. I think some 200's were on the right side too.

I did not think is was. I thought that a production worker was just use to stamping 180's and had not gotten Instructions about how the new 185 were to be stamped.

Our 1970 185 is stamped on the left as well, think they made a change after ‘71 because I saw a few that were on the left as well.

If I were buying one, I would look at condition, mechanical functions, hydraulic PTO option, tire size. Later ones hold more oil. I wouldn’t get so concerned about the stamps unless it does not say 185. Guys in our shop have a location to stamp numbers, I seldom find them where they belong and there are written procedures.

My D19 has a stamp on the bell torque tube so for several years I thought I had a 1962 model but then I learned that the D19 is stamped on the rear housing so I have a 1961 model according to that number. I have never figured that one out.
