I had a guy call me today wondering if I would be interested in working on his 185. He claims the power director jumps out of high range and into neutral. Wondering if anyone has seen this. My dad or I have never heard of this. My only thought is that something happened in the shift lever and it's not holding it in position. I did ask to make sure it's the power director and not the tranny jumping out and that's what he told me. I will go take a look at it one of these nights. Just thought it is kind of a strange problem that I've never seen.

I remember your dad was a mechanic, right? Has he ever run into this problem?

Two things. The detent mechanism is worn out on the P.D. lever or someone has oiled it too much. The pressure regulator is stuck in the Power Director valve causing the pressure to be higher than spec causing the lever to jump out.

Yes my dad has been a mechanic since he started at Kruger implement in 1972. He retired in December of 2017. He has not seen this problem before either. I will go take a look at it and see what I can make of it. Thanks

We had a 185 that had the roller wear almost completely in two on the detent assy. The roller fits in a groove in a tubular assy with a spring in the tube forcing the roller into the groove of the quadrant notches in the shifter. Every time my uncle came to the end planting in high range he shifted back - wore the detent assy slap out.
I did not know this and was taking the tractor to a pull - and found the PD was slipping - I revved it up and let out on the foot clutch and witnessed the slippage. Frustrated I slammed the PD lever forward with the unit reved up and off it went - there is still a bulge in the rear shop wall where it barely stopped before making a new exit.

We run a '69 180, are the power directors the same/similar?? That is EXACTLY how we run the planter and the only issues we've had on it(bought used and abused) were several in/out bearings on tranny shafts, nothing done to the PD and like I said, it's made 10's of thousands of HI to neutral shifts. Should I be concerned??

Gotcha, BUT are the 180's vrs. 185 the same linkages or not? I can look on the APB site and spend some time, but thought maybe one of the "GURO'S" would know off the top of their heads. Still a little sad about how much easier it is to "feather" the PD on the 180 as opposed to the XT
