What is the float made from? I have been picking up a fine silt it the fuel bowl screen-- more so lately, looks like a mud type non magnetic.

I drained it this evening-- looks like a chunk of mud or the float settled to one corner that still had a little fuel left. Fuel gauge worked all along till the tank was at the last 2 gallons, now shows full. I am hoping that its not the float, thought maybe it just deteriated for some reason and fell off. I had just put off road #2 from highs when issues started during mowing some alfalfa.

Could be the new fuel is full of cleaning agents and loosened the old crud buildup and getting it in the strainer.
Many years ago we were using Farmers Union fuel and then the dealer switched over to Cenex fuel... and the D17 got to smoking some and the Oliver 1855 got to smoking bad. we thought it was having oil ruining the engines but turned out the filters were getting plugged and the D17 diesel came back to being strong again and the 1855 had its CAV filters changed twice and boy did that wake the 55 up... an had to do the same with the 190 XTs too. We put a filter on the barrel after that.

I agree with you-- I think it is losening up what ever is in the tank. Gauge is back to working, I was able to scoop out the debris buy cutting down a paint filter. I am in question if #2 fuel is any different than what is sold at the pumps for highway use. Something has changed that's all I'm sure of at this point. I am calling the fuel rep in the morning.

Congratulations it sounds like you have been introduced to premium #2 diesel. Will clean everything up, you should see drop in fuel consumption. You will need to change filters maybe more than once. As far as difference between truck stop/convince store fuel and premium #2 there is no comparison. Truck stop fuel has enough additives in it to meet the minimum requirements. Premium #2 has additives in it to clean everything up and keep it clean, cetain ratings should be higher than antique #2 fuel. Truck stop fuel is made to be delivered and sold and used within days, premium #2 has additives in it to maintain fuel quality while it is in storage. I have had premium #2 in storage for over 10 years and it came out the end of the nozel as good as the day it was pumped into the tank.
