180 Tach/Hour Meter

   I'm continuing with fixing up the one-eighty I acquired a couple years ago.  Just got the transmission, et al, repair completed.  The tractor has an aftermarket tach in it.  The rpm's register but the hour meter does not function.  The mechanic that did the transmission work said it needed a new tach.  He said that there are now wires or cables to connect with the tach.  Is that correct?  Can I get a tach like the original Allis one would be?  I've heard about heritage gauges.  Maybe this is what I need?  Thanks for your input.  Dave

	There are electric and mechanical tachometers. I'm quite sure the 180/185 are mechanical, cable driven tachs. My 7000 had an electric tach. You had to make sure the alternator had a hookup to run the electric tach. I'm sure a 180 could be converted to an electric tach, but why? If your present tach reads rpm's, your cable is obviously ok. Why not just buy a replacement mechanical tach like this one ? Edited by WF owner - 04 Jan 2015 at 10:53am

	The original 180 tach is mechanical and is driven off the back of the alternator. I would recommend finding an original tach and having it rebuilt if necessary. Metro Speedometer in Independence MO does a good job on them. A rebuild by them includes a new cable and there standard charge is $250.00. That is more than a new aftermarket but I've been told by several people that have bought the aftermarket ones that they have broken after about 100 hours of use. The reason is because the little gears inside them are plastic where the originals are made of steel. Bill Deppe in Iowa has a rebuilder he uses that also does a good job. HTH. Don Jr.
