    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 at 3:27pm
Hello all- Was bush-hogging the other day with my 180, shifting back and forth from time to time with the pto lever ( manual linkage ). Hit something that stopped the tractor. Restarted okay and I cut a little more but now the pto will not disengage. The pto works under load, the linkage is all intact-just can't move the lever back to disengage-this is the case with the tractor running or not, clutch engaged or disengaged. The pto does disengage with the clutch pedal pushed in. Pto lever in about the 6 o'clock position. I read another post here with a similar problem but with the pto disengaged. Any help greatly appreciated. Happy Easter btw. Thanks.

The pto shaft has a splined coupler  that you move back and forth to engage and disengage the rear pto shaft.  You have twisted (rare) or grabbed a burr or something on the coupler to shafts to keep it from moving.  I would take a hammer and tap directly on the shifter between the battery box and side of transmission.. If that does not work I would try to move the rear PTO shaft rearward via removing the rear 3 bolts and use a pto shaft tractor half as a puller. IF you get the shaft out you may have not solved the issue. Smooth splines out and pray this the end that was damaged.... This is rare...
When told "it's not the money,it's the principle", remember, it's always the money..

I know this is the wrong color, but I had a similar issue on a Ford tractor I use to have. I hit a stump , killed the motor and then lever  would not disengage the PTO. I removed the shaft and it had a bend in it that was so slight that I couldn't see it with the naked eye. I put it together and took it apart three times before I talked with a Ford mechanic and he told me it was bent even though I couldn't see it. Replaced the shaft and it worked perfectly.

I thought bush hogs had shear pins that would prevent tractors from stopping dead and causing PTO damage.

My 15' batwing Bushog has clutches that must be adjusted each year for proper slippage. The brush hog that I was using on the Ford was a 6 or 7' and someone before me put hard bolts  in place of the soft sheer bolts it should have had.

Bran-when you say ' take a hammer and tap on the shifter lever, I'm thinking you mean tap on it in the direction that would move the pto shifter lever towards the pto disengaged position. The lever is about at a six o'clock position right now with the pto engaged, so I guess that would mean trying to move it to about a 9 o'clock position when viewed from the battery box side. Big question-how hard should I 'tap' it without breaking something inside? I looked at a parts diagram from AGCO, but I'm not grasping how the coupler works with the lever. Anyway, thanks and if this doesn't work I guess I'll try the rear shaft.

Thanks ks-I guess I'll pull the shaft as a last resort. No one knows how to work on these around here.

tbran - just wanted to shout out a big thanks here. I gave the pto lever on the side of the transmission a tap-actually just took a small pry bar and moved it toward the front of the tractor from about the 6:30 position to about the 8:00 position. Pto disengaged. Then used the handle on the left side of the instrument cluster to engage it. Started the tractor and everything seems to be working fine. The handle takes a good bit more force now to move back and forth but at least it works. Thanks again.

I'm sure you've twisted/damaged something. Now, it probably doesn't engage 100%, so even tho it works, someday down the road it may start jumping out of gear by itself.
