    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 at 10:35am
Hi fellows,  I haven't been around in a while.

I'm looking at a 180 diesel.  The guy says he hit a stump while bush hogging and "busted" the PTO housing and clutch.  He says he's owned the tractor since '93.  Says it jumps out of 4th gear only.
Runs good he says.  Seems to be a straight up guy.  The price is right but I'm wondering what I'm getting into with repairs, parts availability and any potential other problems besides the busted housing, shaft and clutch.

Thanks

when I said "potential other problems" I meant from hitting the stump, beyond just
busting the housing and clutch.  I'm not at all familiar with working on 100 series tractors.
Is there anything else (transmission, Power Director, etc. ) that might have been affected too?

Better look at the torque housing where the PTO box bolts on underneath. The torque housing could be cracked/broken/junk.

Thanks Dr. Allis,

Any idea where I can find the PTO housing, front shaft and clutch?  I guess even if I find
one in usable condition I'd probably still need to go through the clutch.  I think the 180 was a 6 plate clutch.  It appears that the larger 100 series housing will interchange
but can I use the 8 plate clutch without changing anything?  I haven't even seen it yet so I might be way off base.

My 180D had the pto clutch come apart while brush hogging a few years back. It also broke the case. I called Cook's tractor in Clinton, Mo. and they had one used. I paid $375 for it and it was guaranteed for I believe 90 days. Pulled the old one out and put the used one in. I think that was 4 years ago and it has worked very well. I have bought quite a few used parts from Cook's and been treated very well. You might check with them or any good tractor salvage in your area.

Charlie, l assume when you say clutch with the PTO. It's a hydraulic PTO, and possibly a 540/1000. If so l have one.

Are the "busted" PTO components an example of using an improper sheer pin somewhere in the drive line ??

Could be, but if there is a slip clutch on the mower, you best read the directions on it before using. You need to release the spring pressure and slip the clutch at the beginning of the season to remove any rust that might build up, then reset spring pressure for your tractor HP.

ILGleaner,

I honestly don't know.  I haven't even seen the tractor yet.  I have a chance to buy it at a good price if it's not damaged beyond what he says/thinks.   What it looks to me like
is there is a wet, multi-disc clutch pack that engages the PTO drive gear.   I'm having problems finding diagrams and descriptions online.   The tractor is an hour from me so I'm trying to figure  out what I'm getting into and if and how much the parts are to fix it.

Freedguy,  that's what I'm guessing but I really don't know.  I've been communicating with the guy by instant messenger and he is stingy with words.

Charlie, I replaced mine in the barn and built a wooden stand to support it when I slid it out. It was a good thing because as a young man I changed out 4 speed transmissions on cars by laying under them and using my knees under the front and my arms and chest under the back. Without the stand the Hydraulic clutch PTO would have ate my lunch. It is heavy.

ksbowman,

Yeah it looks heavy and I'm not young or in particularly good shape any longer.
I'm guessing a transmission jack is in order.

I don't want to come off as being "nosey", but is the seller offering the unit on a "salvage/scrap" price? The 180's are one of the few tractors listed on T/H in decent #'s, the rest of the "under 100 HP models have severely vanished in the past 3 weeks. My point being is a "runner" 180 is somewhat cheap. Good luck and yes,we run a '69 gasser that will remain on the property after the other farm equipment is gone. IMO, almost as good as the D-17 was Wink !!

Yeah, Charlie if you do it on concrete a transmission jack would be wonderful. I was on gravel. Laid down so plywood to work on. Not a hard job at all. I read the shop manual and followed all the steps. Even made a slide hammer for pulling the alignment pins.

Here's what mine looked like after I pulled it and I always adjust my mower clutches each year.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my 180 question (except Freedguy. Apparently you think I'm stupid)
I decided not to buy it. Probably the best deal I ever let go but I just don't feel like fooling with it. I think another local guy bought it.

That wasn't my intention at all. You made it sound like the seller thought the fix would/should be simple(that's how I read it anyhow). My apologies for not making myself clear. I have a friend that fell into one of those "deals" and ended up dumping the purchase after putting twice the purchase price on parts and labor and still didn't get it running. Again, no disrespect intended

Well then I'll accept that but here's a couple of clues for you for the future.
If you think you have to apologise for being nosey keep your mouth shut. Don't ask people what they are paying for something.
Confine your comments to the questions being asked instead of speculating about what you imagine the issue is.

I have to tell you, I'm pretty easy going and generally appreciate anyone's input and comments but absolutely everything you said pissed me off. I'm almost 69 years old and have been on Allis Chalmers tractors since I was 5, just not any of the hundred series. I asked specific questions and wanted specific answers, not dribble and speculation. If that offends you so be it.
As for you asking if I was paying salvage price for it, that was then and is now none of your business. It's a small world and others reading this message board can easily enough find what I was trying to buy. In fact one gentleman in this group was already aware of the deal and was nice enough to let me know in a private message and encourage me.
