I have been thinking of getting a 180 or 185 tractor and selling my D17 diesel and CA.
Anything other than a gear jumper, that need to look out for?

My thinking is keep your D-17 diesel and CA tractors. Then look for the best 180 or 185 you can find. I kept the first tractor I brought when I upgraded to little bit larger tractor plus a cab with air conditioning. Plus I never regret keeping it. Just my opinion.

I don't know how to check for this but if it occasionally dies than starts back up easily. The pump needs rebuilt.

Check the brakes.
Put it in 4th and mash the brakes - see if if the clutches slip in high or low

We could point out advantages either way (60 series vs. 100 series), but I, personally, would much rather have a 180 or 185.

Ive always luved the hum of a 301 in a One Eighty diesel- have a fond for them , worked for a fella that had one from new 1968- tractor prolly had 20,000 hours on it as he went all over baling hay , crops ,  had it worked on at an AC dealer when needed, one engine overhaul, brakes , and a 4 th gear replacement - tractor wasnt abused but did what it was designed for - Id go One Eighty

185 at least can have 540/1000 pto, essentially same tractor otherwise.

I think it odd that according to TractorData there about roughly 3000 more 185 built than 180 tractors. But I noticed that you can find more 180 for sale, hardly any 185. Are people keeping their 185 because they are more popular ?

The 185 seems to have the reputation for more long term value...both nice property to own....

keep in mind, 185's were built into 81, so some could be much newer. But remember the 180 came in 67, through 73? 185 came in 70, so 3-4 years of being built consecutively. Either one will be a step up from a 17.

The reality is this: if you owned a D-17, especially a series 3 or 4, when you traded for another new Allis, you didn't buy a One-Seventy. You moved up a size or two and bought a One-Eighty or 185. Think how many sales of a gasoline One-Eighty were missed out on for nearly two years of diesel only models. That was a shame.

X2   I had a nice 6080 2wd cab/AC  sold it bought a 1 owner late model 185 and enjoy it a lot more.  I grew up on a 170 diesel so I  just like the layout better.   I agree both have positives. 6080 is a good tractor, just lack of a power director, no detent on  3pt. hitch hydraulic lever and few other things just didn't suite me, but I know a lot of guys think the opposite.

Don't think there is much difference between the two, except the PTO and Some 185 like mine came with a large rear tire.  Pretty much the same other wise.

Dad bought a new 180 in 1970. A few years later we were at the dealer, and they had a 185. Looked like the same tractor. Dad asked the dealer why the 185 was rated at higher hp. Dealer said they both had the same power it was just that nebraska test 185 was tested at 200 higher rpm. And that on their dyno the 180 always had more hp then they was rated at.

Well, i found a 180, pretty good shape. Diesel, good tires, only 1 small dent in the hood. 4914 hours on the tack, but its not working, rpm works. Runs good.
Tried to load pictures from my phone, no go.
Used it on the mower Saturday and everything works as it should!
Thanks for all the info
Randy

That sounds like a pretty nice tractor by your description ( I think your description is on target by you being the buyer instead of the seller ) and specially sounds nice being a fifty year old tractor. I been following your post and like hear more comments as you used your new tractor. Sounds like a great find.

Something about taking off a piece on the pump and removing a ball is a temporary fix when the rubber governor ring comes apart and blocks up the return.  If this is done on any diesel you look at is only mater of time until a pump rebuild.   I have a 185 with five rail 30's on back that I use to cut hay and plant corn with a AC 330 planter, narrow four row with a monitor.  My youngest two like to go on the tractors and pretend to drive them.
