Started the 180 with the disc mower.  Looked like full PTO speed without the tractor moving.  Over about 5 minutes of testing the PTO was noticably slipping/slower.  Felt like it might have been ok with the power director in neutral initially, or only when driving, then was slipping without driving as well and with the mower just idling (not under load).  Didn't notice any steering pressure issues.    Have never noticed any PTO slip issues before with heavy PTO loads like balers or brush hogs.

Only had a chance to just glance through the book so far.  Power director relief valve, linkage, PTO valve spool leakage....just wondering if there are some obvious troubleshooting methods to pin this as a hydraulic control issue versus an internal clutch problem.

Could be a bad O-ring.  Had a bad on on our 180.  Once the O-ring was replaced, no problem and plenty of power.
The repair was done by the dealer.  We had bought the tractor (used) from the Allis dealership in Winfield, Kansas in the  mid to late 1970's.

I would say it just appears it is slowing down.            MACK

Update: Tried troublshooting the valves, and while there was a slightly sticky main spool on the PTO valve I didn't find anything unusual.  Didn't have a proper gage to check pressure, so I ordered one, and in the meantime just stuck an air hose on the pressure inlet at the front of the shaft.  Could hear a huge leak within, so pulled the clutch out.

Wasn't too bad a job getting it out.  Extracting the two dowel pins were the worst part.

With it on the bench, the two O-rings on the shaft surrounding the inlet hole into the clutch housing are in bad shape.  I suspect this is the majority of the issue as the teflon piston seals look pretty good.  Probably will test on the bench with new O-rings since they are the easy and replacable items.  If teflon leaks, will have to start looking for a source for these...

Found some smashed parts of a snap ring at the bottom of the splines in the clutch housing.  Its not shown on the parts breakdown and probably considered part of the housing.  (photo of internal splines, that gap at the bottom had the snap ring)

The book doesn't list any wear limits on the clutch discs.  Any specs or thoughts on these?  "Replace them while it's apart" is a good thought, but this isn't a heavily used tractor and trying not to dump more cash into it than necessary.

If the friction discs and separator plates aren't warped or look like they've been hot, I'd reuse them.

Thanks, that is good info.  The definitely don't appear warped or burnt.  I'll be lucky if I get out of this for a couple dollars of O-rings.  Not counting all that cheap labor I've invested!

Well the O-rings alone didn't fix it and I need to replace the teflon piston rings.

Internet searches come up dry, so its time to start making calls.  Any suggestions on dealers/parts gurus that might have this stuff still in stock?

Looking for piston inner and outer seals, the expander rings, plus the teflon shaft seal where the front shaft plugs into the hyd fitting at the front of the case.

70248064 - outer seal
70248065 - inner seal
70248067 - expander ring
70248068 - expander ring
70244461 - shaft seal

Found the parts!  Bulter Machinery, North Dakota.  Extremely helpful folks there.
