18.4-38's on a 190XT

I was wondering if it can be done, to put 18.4-38 tires on the rear of a 190 xt? The reson I would like to do this, is to get the back end of the tractor a little higher for windrow clearance when baling, and also it would make both the tractor and the baler sit level. It would also give me a much needed faster road gear. I realize it would gear me up some and maybe cost me a little power, but I would hope that what I do now in 3rd gear (or 5th and 6th technically), I  could do about the same in 2nd gear (3rd and 4th) with the taller tires. Any thoughts? Thanks, Darrel

I've got factory 38" rims on my 190XT with 18.4 radials and no fluid....can't say that it is any faster going down the road, but it pulls well, and is also slow enough in 1st gear for good performance from my Northwest 8' Rotovator.  It came with the big rubber 13 x 16?) up front, but I now have my 20" NOS rims and truck tires on it for a wider wheelbase.

My 1967 xt has 18.4x38. I can't prove it's not from the factory. It has the shift pattern decal for using 18.4x38 but it was repainted at one time way back. Works great.

Same as a 200 or some company makes extension blocks from 34 to 38.

Scott I had them on my 175D brushhogging tractor when I used the 6 ft mower...but had to put the loaded 9.5L-15's back on when I got the 8ft JD MX8 mower. I put these on the 190 to get the front wheels out far enough for the rollover plow (someone replaced the tie rods with ones that were too short) and they have stayed on there ever since.

38 inch wheels were optional on 190s, so its not a stretch.  I have 18.4X38s on my D19 diesel and they look good too.  It doesnt do much field work anymore, but pulls ok.

18.4-34 tires are 193.8" circumference, axel turns 327 times for a mile.   18.4-38 is 205" around and turns 309 times for a mile. If your tractor is running at 15 miles an hour, the bigger tires will get you up to 15.9 mph.  Now if you put some 20.8X38 tires on, they are 215.7" around and would get you up to 16.7mph.

Assuming the rpm of the engine is the same though. If the engine drops because of the higher hp demand due to the upgearing of the tires, the speed may settle back to the 15mph number.

190 xt's don't drop in RPM very easy.

Dog gone it  Troy, I need to learn how to use the digital camera to post pictures on here!! I own JPG some pics of my D17 III with cab.    the tires are radials too!!!!   Ya cruise around on tractor rides about 1/2 trottle, them guys on them there red ones dont get to far ahead of it!!!!

Dan, I was reading your post again, and wondering, when you say "extension blocks", are you meaning that you can get those wedges that go between the cast iron wheel and the rim that will allow me to use the same cast wheel, but a 38 inch rim and tire? Thanks, Darrel

I know you can get the wedges to use the same centers and just buy rims, neighbor did this to 2 or 3 4020 JDs, don't know where but I would think any good tire store should know .

you can also get step up rims, cheaper than all the blocks and buying rims too.

I would say 18.4-38's is the way to go!!! They are harder to find with the 38's Here are a couple photos of some of the ones we have with the 18.4-38's.   THey will go right at or around 17 mph with the 38's.

Andrew, them are some very nice looking one-ninety XT's, thanks to all for posting the pics. I quite certain that by hay baling time next year, I'll some how or another have 18.4-38's on the rear and some pretty good sized diamond tread tires on the front of my one-ninety XT. I guess I'm too fussy, but I think I'm going to look for some different cast centers and everything (used of course) so that it looks original. However I haven't ruled out buying the step up wedges that Henry posted having for sale. Thanks, Darrel
