With normal care what would be the adverage overhaul of the engine hours be?

Is 4000 close to the age one should consider a over haul soon.

Hmmm......I've been farming with my Dad for as long as I can remember (age 51), with most of 9 years age 23-31 missing when I lived out of state.  We've never overhauled an engine.  Seems I remember as a kid, young kid, Dad had the head off a JD 50 and had the valves done.  I think.
 
My point is, overhaul it when it needs it...Still run good?  Makes the right amount of power for the tractor and what you want to do with it?  How's the blowby?(amount, feel, contents), how's the oil consumption (or lack thereof), compression test? (even on all cylinders), . . . etc.

Every engine is designed to burn "X" amount of fuel until it needs to be overhauled. Now, do you burn all that fuel in 4,000 hrs or 8,000 hrs??  Point is this...a tractor that pulls a plow all the time will need to be overhauled much sooner than one that is used for light work. This assumes maintenance is equal and they are never overheated.

We did break a crank on a MF 165 kind of out of the blue.  When repaired, I'm "sure" some stuff was freshened up (sorry, still a little too young to know the details), but then a few years later, threw a rod through both sides of the block and oil pan, so maybe they didn't do such a great job of repairing it after all!!!  The tractor didn't have that many hours on it at the time of the crank failure.  I'd say it was about 8 years old, maybe 2500 hours tops?  Kind of a wild guess on hours but the age is close.

I am think of buying a 175 with near 4000 hr's on it and can't take the trip to drive or work it. Just one trip to hual it home.

Seems to me with adverage maintance and adverage Farm work there should be some kind of an adverage.

This topic has been on HEF. One opinion was flywheel rated HP was multiplied by 100   So a 60 hp tractor should be good for 6,000
hours. Your results may vary......

In my opinion, the hours you are talking about would be no problem but if you don't know how the tractor was used and the frequency of service it is always a gamble. I got a 6060 with 6000 hrs ,8010 with 6000. And others in the 7 to 8000 range and depend on them with little problems. I sold a 7000 with 9200 hrs 8 yrs ago and he is still rolling hay with it. All these get serviced between 80 and 100 hrs. The 8010 will be overhauled in the next year or so to freshen it up. I feel cold starts and short run times in the winter ,like feeding cattle, will shorten the life of a motor but on the other hand running one too hot will for sure shorten its life. So to shorten my story go buy the 175 and don't use it and it will last forever!! Scott

Regardless of the brand tractor 4000 hrs on a well maintained tractor is still a fresh tractor. The J Ds , IH and case tractors at the farm all have 12 to 15 k hours on them. None are canadates for overhaul. The on exception was the 9270 it had 4000 hours when purchased and started eating water. It was a tractor that didn't get used enough. The antifreeze had problems never been changed and the cyl rotted out. After the overhaul it got a antifreeze filter system added. We do test and add anti corrosion to all the tractors every spring. My one WD 45 has had a head job when I bought it. A previous owner had run with bad exhaust gaskets so long new ones wouldn't seal. My little C smoked when I got it in 1986. I used it for everything for 25 years till I bought another tractor. It was still smoking when I gave it away last month. Started on the first trun of the crank only used a quart of oil mowing 8 acres all summer so I never did overhaul it.

My dad overhauled his 175 with a Perkins at around 7000 hours, it was his main tillage tractor for years until he bought a 190.
190XT Series III, D17 Series IV, D15 Series II, All Crop 66 and a whole mess of equipment.

Thank ya all so much for the replys. With about 3000 more hours to go before it would be close to an over haul I should get many a years use out of it. will see if can work out a deal with the guy that has it for sale.

Hours are irrelevant to me.  It depends more on how it was used and how it was looked after...

My 175D has 4800 original hours on it and it doesn't smoke, has plenty of pep, and purrs like a kitten yet. Bought it from the family that bought it new. Never did ask them if they ever touched the motor but I hope to go another 5000 hrs. before I have to think about overhauling mine. And at about 50hrs. or less a year usage;  well, actually I'll be good and dead by the time it hits 7500, at that rate.

I have relation with a MF 383 diesel, almost the same basic engine as the AC 175.....they've had it since knew....and estimate it has about 12500 to 15000 hrs on it by now. Never has given any major mechanical troubles, but yes, it's long overdue for an overhaul.

If your 175 in question, was given that "normal" care and operation, then in my opinion, at 4000 hrs. That engine shouldn't even be middle-aged yet.

In my head, for good diesel tractors of that era, 10,000 is the "milestone".  Yes, many make it well past that, many need help way before that, but just a general milestone, with many variables along the way.
