I have a 170 that has quit steering. Got stiff butwill slightly turn wheels to the left and wheel goes hard to the right but will turn with no movement of the tires. I can pick up the front end with the loader which works fine and turn the wheels both directions but steering wheel isn’t smooth like it should be. Have changed fluid and filter with no luck and also added fluid to the Allen head fill cap under the radiator/fan. I have read what I could find about this topic but looking for some direct feedback thank you.

As you describe the problem...sounds like the steering pump section has blown internal seals. The main hydraulic pump has 3 sections.

Ok thank you. I understand the pump has three sections like you said. The inner most towards the tractor for steering is that correct? And is it worth doing the full seal kit of the pump while it’s off? Seems to be the one most commonly found

I always reseal the whole pump when I have one apart. Whichever sections output line goes to the steering orbitrol is the one to work on.

I found a very detailed description and pictures for breakdown and repair in IT shop manual. Thanks again for the information 👍🏼

I hope you find the problem in the pump. I've never had a steering pump section ever fail on a 170, so you'd be the first.

It could be the seals in the steering cylinder or possibly the rack broke which would allow it to steer one way, but not the other...
