M code engins are found in most D17's,   170's  and Gleaner E111's have a little more compression an those are z code. D 17 lp and 175's have even more compression and are V code engines.

The M code is 7.2:1 compression ratio.  The Z is 8.0:1 and the V is 8.2:1.   Of course all that's different in the engines to change the ratios is the piston heights, so who knows what is actually inside on a 35 to 50 year old engine.  I know of an M engine for example, with 8.2:1 pistons in it.
