Looking at a 170 black stripe gas that needs a radiator. I've heard they are hard to find. Why is that, and can one from a d17 gas be modified to work if necessary

No, a D17 rad is totally different. D17 is tall and skinny. 170 rad is short and wide. If you already have a rad, get it recored. I did that with my 175. 170s and 175s are low production tractors, so the aftermarket is not going to spend lots of money to sell a small number of radiators.
