Going to put new shovels on my 30 ft 1300 this spring. What does everyone like to run on theirs? Shoup has 6, 8 and 10 inch ones for sale. Current spacing is at 6 inches between the shanks.
Anyone ever spaced the shanks out a bit more, then ran bigger sweeps? I think this would help trash flow quite a bit |

We have a 30ft Krause and we used to run the narrow roughly 2in wide ones you can flip. This year we switched to the 6in sweeps and they do a little better job. Our shank spacing might be slightly wider than yours.

Get a 1400 Chisel-vator if you want 7 1/2" or 9" spacing (they were available both ways). Try and run any wider shovel than 6 inch and you will plug more often AND overload the shank bending it backwards in some soil conditions.

I had 6" on mine until I replaced them with used 9" ones. It is twice the machine now. Not to contradict the Dr, but the wider shovels reduced the plugging and it does a better job. I haven't broke a shank yet and its been that way 6 years.

Some of the Shoup shovels have blunt curved edges, wont' cut until they get a few thousand acres of wear. The square nose is all that is sharpened. Lousy for cutting weeds. I mounted a set of them and after their failing to take out weeds I spent half a day under the field cultivator with an angle grinder putting a cutting edge on them. That is their Marathon I sweep. The other sweeps probably have a sharp leading edge but I've not bought them.
