My mother has a small Ford diesel 4x4 hydrostat tractor. My brother took it to his house and abused it severely like he does all equipment. He parked it and it has sat for a few years. I need to sell it. I went yesterday and put a fresh battery on it and went to cranking. The coil would turn red hot but I’m not sure the gloplugs were working. I cranked much more than I wanted but it started and sounded good. I let it run about 15 minutes then backed it out in the open and started airing up tires. It made an awful sound and locked up. I can turn the motor by hand. I hit the starter and it spun a bit and locked again. I can still turn the motor by hand in either direction. I’m assuming it’s the starter. Anyone have a guess?

What 'coil' are you talking about that got red hot?
I'm assuming the starter solenoid.

I have 1320 which is about the same thing but mine came in pieces and had to jigsaw puzzle it back together including the hydro trans.

This one had trouble starting cold from what the owner said. The hot plate that the glow plugs attach to had a loose connection. That's all. I put glow plugs in it anyway.
It also had the fuel shut off solenoid stuck shut. I just took it apart and cleaned it up in brake cleaner.

I could guess that if the starter wasn't releasing after starting it could seize and kill it.
I have seen it happen on a couple of Honda cars before and alternators on a few others that seize and you would swear the engine was locked up till you take the belt off.

The coil on the dash for the glow plugs. When it turns red it will start.

Sounds like a bad connection, ground etc. Battery to block and misc. others. You can get some parts for this beast aftermarket but very few. Other than that I had to go through Messicks (New Holland) for parts and you better have a fat wallet. When I put that hydro back together I got a seal kit with about 45 seals and o rings. Came in a sandwich bag and was $400.

I still don't understand why it would shut down like that and still rotate by hand. If you get it going you can get a pretty good chunk of change out of those. Good shape or not.

it’s supposed to turn red.
I don’t know why it would lock up like that either. I tried it once after it died. Spun half a turn and hit hard. Grabbed the fan and could turn it either way.

I admit I'm not the sharpest stick but the coil on the dash......is it a light or an actual coil, winding etc...? Trying to wrap my head around this.

It's got me bugged now. What kind of noise does it make when it dies?
Try to recreate in words like Joe would doTongue if you can.

It’s a little round knob with a hole Maybe 1/4” that turns red when the glow plugs are ready to start it.
Update I went there this morning and pulled the starter. I saw nothing wrong. I put it back on and drove the tractor home 1/4 mile. In my driveway it started smoking and dieseling. I shut it off instantly. 20 minutes later it started back up and ran fine for about 15 minutes. Then same thing. It’s like it loads up on diesel and starts pinging.

Do I need to siphon the old diesel and add new? What about conditioner? It has a glass filter like a gas burner. It’s running good now but at half throttle and above will smoke diesel smoke and ping once in a while. Seems to be getting better. I don’t have much diesel experience.

Yeah that would be a good idea to get the old crap out of there and change the filter. My filter setup is the same way. Wouldn't hurt to put some sort of cleaner/conditioner in it and run it for a good long while to let it get good and hot.

Joe I didn't say you talked too much. You just have a lot too saySmile
