Hey y'all.
I know the addage "throttle down gear up" and quite a lot of my work is low power.

What's the lowest working and long term idling these engines should do?

I don't want to starve the motor of oil or cause stress on it when I don't need to. But I do not need all 100hp and 2200rpm for things like moving equipment around the yard or making an empty trailer.

Interesting question.  How often do you give it a decent workout?  I don't own a 190XT, but I've raked hay for hours on end at 1000 rpm or so with many tractors.  Just enough speed to where it will hold a steady speed.  But then those tractors get worked or revved at other times.

Does the temp come up on these tasks?  If so, I'd think you're ultimately OK.  Sitting idling for long times can "wash" the cylinders which isn't good of course.

For a 190 diesel i would want to go 1500-1600 in the field. Just putting around the yard 1100+. Even when I sit and load a manure spreader quick I like to run 700-800. Other wise next you will be posting about black running down your exhaust.

The way you say that “Even when…”, how low does it go?

Maybe for a gas, but the diesel is more around 800.  600 Is too low for the diesel.

ok. I’m not trying to be difficult but does 600 vs 700 really make a difference when it’s just sitting there doing nothing? Loading a spreader I just idle all the way down. With today’s prices I’d probably shut it off!!

Don't let any set at low idle. Usually bump a couple 100 up on 220. Those 8000's got to be sped up to get rid if the drivetrain rattle.

If you have ever had an older tractor with a well used engine, when it was warm and you pull it down to low idle and it has an oil pressure gauge. It drops pretty low, bump it up just a couple 100 rims and oil pressure goes up 10 lbs. That's the reason to not let them idle too low. If you got a good tight motor with good oil pressure, drop those rpms down low as you want to. I wouldn't shut off a tractor while loading manure, although I hate the price of fuel I don't enjoy replacing a delcoe starter on a 190 and you can't pull start them if you need to.

I was really hoping to hear 1000-1100 was good.

It's probably every... 8-12 engine hours or so I get it up to 1900-2000 and at full temp for maybe an hour. So I wouldn't say it's completely babied.

80% of the time I use it 1-2 hours a day. Lately even less, being out of season. I caught myself not letting it get up to temp, so I've started letting it idle at about 800-1000 to get to temp before I turn it off.

Sounds like 1000 and up to temp is probably enough to not cause damage?
