Ive finally gotten around to diagnosing the misfire issue. Im measuring valve spring tension and none seem to be as expected. The stongest one is 55psi and one was only 35psi. The head rebuild was supposed to take care of that. Ill measure again after i research my technique...i bought an on head tool. It seems easy enough to use. I & T says 55-65psi to 1 5/16". One source says 70 psi but none approach that.

Appears that the tool cant accommodate the wide rocker pushrod to valve spacing. Ive enquired to the manufacturer if additional spacer inserts are available. Unfortunately, i think that will make the readings worse not better...lever arm pivet point is presently behind the valve which means it requires more force to compress the spring

The tool vendor indicates that ill have to calibrate the tool by installing a spring of known value then adjusting the pivot length and then measure the other springs. Not how i assumed it would work, but makes sense...they're sending additional spacers...the tool design assumes modern racing engines and didn't anticipate such long rocker arms. To start, ill assume the strongest spring is in spec and see what the variation is.

I believe ive found a significant issue with cylinder 3 exhaust rocker. When you remove slack and aren't careful about applying a light side force, it twists slightly. Then if you measure it, its in spec. However if you are careful to remove slack by applying perfectly in line force, it only has .003 clearance. Not good. Ive reset the clearance for the inline movement and will see how it runs. Unfortunately, i left the key on and ran the battery down and its taking forever to charge. Several rockers are similarly worn. I had assumed the rebuild checked all that but apparently not. Im probably going to buy a complete new set if this helps. With so much wear, when the push tube contacts it, the rocker again twists.

here is a photo of the rocker arm shaft with the rockers installed... are you saying the rocker arm BORE is worn and it wobbles on the shaft ? I have never had that problem....(maybe they wobble a few thousandths and i have never considered that a problem ???).... I have never checked the spring tension either.. only problem i have noticed is the rocker arm pad that sets on the valve is not always centered on the valve.. Have seen serveral that are way of center... but dont seem to hurt anything..

here is a picture of one HEAD that had a bad freeze plug.... look at the two valves and their rockers and you can see they are OFF CENTER.... That seems to be very common on these old engines..

Both the rocker and the shaft have deep wear grooves...when it twists, the contact point can slide and cant 1/8 inch. Only one has this weird behavior...
