Just curious, Is there any way to tell if a 1942 engine is factory original? I’m about ready to rebuild it soon.

the only things that can possibly not be "original" is the piston / liners / rings... You never know if they have the overbore pistons and liners, or factory parts... Gaskets, cam, crank, rods, gaskets, everything else will be "original" ... at least in size... You would have to take the head off to see what the bore is... There were some aftermarket pistons that might use a different size rings... so pull one piston before you order rings..

Another thing, I know that there is a wick at the end of the crank to lube the pilot bearing. How do you install it and how much does it stick out?

i cut one end to a point so it looks like a nail... soak it good with engine oil... poke into the hole and push with a pair of needle nose pliers... might use a pick to help push into the hole.. engine end is flush.... flywheel end sticks out a minimal amount to distribute the lube... It sould be compressed TIGHT into the hole.. you only want a drop now and then to get thru it.. not a flow.

The casting number on the block should end with a -13 or -14 for a 1942

So the BE and CE block is the same? Only difference is the bore of the liners?
The tractor engine is BE but I have a CE spare engine that was in a C. Just wondering which engine to rebuild. |

It ends with 13. So it must be left over from 1941. The CE block I have ends with 12. Edited by john2189 - 2 hours 2 minutes ago at 1:14pm |

the last two digits started with 10, then 11, then 12 etc.... WE THINK they went by years, so a 1940 is a 10 and a 1941 is an 11, etc.... may not be exact, but that seems to be close.. The BE engine continued into the CE with a bigger bore on the cylinder.. Everything else is the same... this ASSUMES that the engine has not be rebuilt in the last 80 YEARS... It is entirely possible that the BE has the same pistons ( larger) like the CE... Also possible that it has some AFTERMARKET pistons in it............ I bought one B that had been rebuilt in the past and it had M&W piston and the piston rings were not the same as the Allis ring size.
