parked D-19 2 days ago , came out to start  today, nothin, no lights, just like dead batt.  started testing batteries, 1 had +6volts and 1 had -6volts then later -4 volts, hook 2 together and just like they cancel each other out???  started and charged fine 2 days ago. ever seen this?  what would cause batt to switch polarity?? had to order new batt, batteries were only 3 moths old

That sounds strange. Couple of questions. Are you sure you were checking the polarity right? DC meter will read negative if polarized backward. Next, i'm not too familiar with D-series, are batteries in parallel? Is pos from one going to pos of other, and neg to neg? I'm guessing they should, if you're running 6 volt system. Series connection would give you 12 volts from neg of one batt to pos of other. Have you checked the voltage from the neg of one batt to the pos of the other? Are you getting these readings with the batteries unhooked from the tractor completely? If not, I would try that. That may help narrow things down some. I would take the batteries to town. Most parts stores or garages have battery testers. They can test battery with load applied to let you know if it is good or bad. You may have a shorted cell. If batteries test good, you may have a shorted cable draining everything.

i checked both batteries the same, unhooked from cables, with multimeter, its a 12volt pos ground system, using 2 6 volt batt in series,  if i leave batt hooked up in series check pos post on one batt and neg on other batt i get no volt reading, just like they cancel each other out, if check seperately + 6 volts on one  - 6volts on other batt

by what you've just described in the last post, the labeling is wrong on one of the batteries. that doesn't explain why everything was fine yesterday or the day before.

Brian, charge them seperatly and then come back after awhile and see how much amperage each has. put a carbon pile load tester to them and you should be able to tell right away.
Fellow had a battery tester he hooked up to a car battery. It said to turn ignition on and do a series of things and finally the tester said vehical has not been run for over 60 days and battery condiion was at 80% and should replace battery to avoid a failure on the road.   when I went to drive the car home for the person the battery had been almost dead so we had jumped it and then it charged up for awhile before we stuck the tester on. Sophisticated instuments out there.
D17 Batter holder got rust pretty bad and a sharp edge had cut through the casing and allowd weepage out of the bottom of the battery and then it grounded itself out through the electrolite and ground post. caused it to be charged up but then discharge over a period of a few days.
Could that may have happened? I wouldn't think so after all your work to restore the tractor and batteries are 3 months old. Maybe one of the cells died or came apart inside.
That is weird, Let us know what caused it.

It seems obvious to me.....their Bret Favre batteries.  Don't worry they'll come back around and be positive in a little while.  Caution though..don't put a time line on them or they will leak and go away.  Also, don't let them get hit they might get even more temperamental.  And, in general they don't like being cold so you might want to put a blanket on them when you charge them.

As someone else pointed out some time back, 6 volt batteries sit on the shelf sometimes for a very long time before they are sold as there is not much demand for them.  Those 3 month old batteries could be very old before you get them.

I thought I was being funny Lonn but I got up much too early this morning so am not all here mentally.  Though even when I am all here it's not a lot of ability or capacity.

AGCO is bothering me.  I've felt shafted with my AGCO stuff since they did there thing so it's rocked my equipment world a tad.  I worked numbers on a Kubota deal yesterday and it's worse than the New Holland deal.  Word is that that AGCO's announcement cost me $2,000-$3,000 on my one big tractor alone.  At least I don't have those really big ones and a big new soon to be canceled Gleaner.

I had a nice trip through your fine state on Monday though.  I visited a great made in USA clothing store in Wyoming MN that really made me happy.  Takes a lot of searching out of buying clothes for me now and I love the stuff I got.  I also learned that MN doesn't charge tax on clothing, has a law that if you get government money for clothing/boots you have to spend it on made in USA stuff and you can't buy an American flag in MN unless it's made in USA.  Really made me love MN more.  Spent Monday night in Duluth.  I've been there twice now and I just love that city.  I told my wife that I hope we don't have to move but if we do I hopes it's Duluth.

Thanks for asking.

Byron

Have you figured out your battery problem? I've never seen a battery read negative polarity unless the leads of the meter were reversed. However when it comes to electricity everything isn't always as it seems and nothing surprises me anymore.

blee if you check the pos post on one battery and the neg post on the second battery you would come up with a zero reading. second question i have for you. why dont you throw them six volt batteries away and put one really big twelve volt battery in. it would be cheaper and less of a hassle. also if you get a negative reading be sure that you have not got your leads crossed

only seen a battery with wrong polarity once, in a gehl skidloader with a gas engine. Battery had gone dead and customer hooked up charger wrong. Then it cranked over but wouldn't start. Took me a little bit to figure that one out.
