I have the PTO out from under my tractor, going to replace the seals. My questions are around the shims on the output shaft bearing cage. I was able to carefully remove and separate the steel and paper shims. There are two each .010 steel, .005 steel, and .005 paper. One question is on the paper to steel. Should there be a paper shim between each steel shim? Just curious why there was a combination of steel and paper. Are there any tricks to ensure there is a good seal between the new shims?
Thanks
Jeff

Jeff - I did this to my WD45 last fall. Yes there is a paper shim/gasket between each steel shim. I'm guessing the theory is that the steel to steel shims would leak oil. I put new paper shims/gaskets for any that had fallen apart. I'm happy to report mine does not leak from the bearing retainer or the new shaft seals. Mike

Number of shims determines tooth contack , To many and gears roar, not enough and gears will whine . Remember helping dad put one a WC and that was in instructions, Ben well over 60 yrs ago .

Actually, the shims are used to set the preload/play on the tapered bearings, not the gear mesh. The shims for gear mesh (if any) would be between the bottom of the torque housting and the PTO gearbox..
