wd45 lift cylinder rebuild

Guys, I took the packing but off the end of the cylinder and cannot get what looks like a big washer that is between the seal and packing but to come out of the cylinder. Does the cylinder have to be unscrewed? It would not come apart. Is there anything in there that a little heat would destroy? Thanks guys
