I saw a decent 440 for sale today. The sheet metal and cab look straight and the engine runs well. What is a unit like this worth assuming that the transmission, rear end, etc. are good? What are the potential problems with them? Thanks.

Tractorhouse.com has 4 ranging in price from $7,900-16,500. Seems a bit high though.

The down fall of all of the 440's was their Cummins 555 engine. When it's junk it's junk, not much fixing to it.

If it has 3 point, it is worth a bunch more I would think. $2500 to $3500 ?
Hope that helps, Darryl

Cummins don't even make or sell parts for that engine any more, so I've been told. I read in Norm Swinford's book that Steiger would have put a Cat or a cummins in that tractor for Allis, and Allis chose the cummins. Now I am not a fanatical Cat guy, but I think Allis made the wrong choice in this case. Darrel

cornbinder, I know what you mean, I wasn't bashing cummins, because generally speaking they have a good product. Just that the 555 didn't pan out so well for them. Darrel

Both the 555 and 903 V8's were not anywhere as dependable as the inline 6's. I'm not sure why they even built them, perhaps demand for shorter engines with lots of power. Drove both but never owned one. I'm sure someone on the forum can tell us a lot more.

Maybe the point about the 555 engine could be used to lower the price ? Then what about a retrofit ? Maybe a 225 cat ? I know they are a throw away engine also but can be bought cheap. I had one in a cat excavator and it was easy on fuel

If the Cummins is bad just transplant a 3208 cat in it same as a Steiger Bearcat, na 225hp. There is a ton of used ones around in old ford 8000 trucks for cheap and not hard to rebuild.

I bet the choice of engine had a little to do with CAT being competition in earth moving equipment and some farm equipment.

I picked up an original sales brochure with the 210 220 and 440 in it and if you look...the 440 has a CAT 3208 in it. I'll have to scan or take a picture sometime. -Wes

Why would anyone want to take out a throw away Cummin's engine and go to all the trouble to replace it with a throw away Cat 3208. Cat as did Cummins both made some great engines. I know near nothing about a 555 but I do know most 3208's were junk when it came time to rebuild.
Rather have a 2 stroke Detroit in it. Perkin's had a V-8 diesel in the 1155's. Would that be a good swap in power to the 555? I have used a 1155, runs out nice with lots of power but the V-8doesn't lug like a straight 6. Many times pulling it down in rpm's to turn it would fall on it's face.

Yea, I can fix that.....

the 555 cummins can be a good engine, most that have bad experiences with them would of had just as bad luck with the cat v-8. I have used the 3208 in mf 1805, 903 in trucks. Our cummins rep has warned not to lug, slow idle, or over rev the one in our 440 and it will be fine. Parts are still available, did have the pump rebuilt, next will do the injectors just as a precaution.
The 555 was used in a lot of different applications, from marine, fire trucks, ag, and industrial. Engines have changed a lot over the years as we all know, my current truck has a maxxforce (man) engine which is to be kept between 1000 and 1400 rpms, the 440 is run about 2500 under load, after spending the day at 1100 climbing into the 440 and running at 2500 plus is hard, but thats what she wants. Much harder to get 440 tractor parts than the engine parts |

The 555 was in 555 Versatiles as well. The problem was, as Ive said before and will say again, they got overpulled most of the time. If so, they wore out. A neighbor had one, pulled 2 16.5 international discers, lasted forever. Another neighbor had one, pulled 3 16.5 discers, wrecked it. Neighbor 2 would tell anyone who would listen it was a pile of junk...Around here most repower with 8.3 Cummins, I think there is a kit to do that. Overall I think a 440 at 5-7 k is a good tractor, just dont expect to lug it to death, it wont last. My 2 cents, Trev.

If it was mine, I would put a cummins 855 in it at about 250hp. That was what we did when we rebuilt steigers in the late 90's.

Forgot to mention, Ive seen one repowered with a 5.9 cummins, and the one I really liked was a 6.7 cummins repower, looked really slick, and I think just the right amount of power, Trev

I know this post is old but I have 440 with 555 cummins. the rated rpm is 2800 but I pull mine at 2200 rpm and have no problems. It is my opinion and everyone has one but I think people are over reving and over loading the engine. That is where the problems start,

I also run my 440 at 2200 RPM, a little less power but I don't worry about that 555 going south some day. |
