Hi,

A local farmer is need of some assistance sourcing a bearing for a disc harrow.  He doesn't know computers so he called me. I don't know farming but willing to help. So I'm hoping someone in this forum can assist.

Bearing part# 333681
Bearing holder part #348870

That's the numbers he read to me over the phone off of the parts. He said the bearing is 3 inches in diameter and about 2-1/2 inches long with 2 grooves that go around the bearing that fits with the bearing holder. There's also some sort of rubber boot too.

He needs to know of a place to buy these arts. Either respond to this post or send a PM.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim Barry

He also said the bearing fits onto a 1 inch hex shaft.

Baum Hydraulics has a considerable collection of disk bearings. Download section Q of their catalog, their search engine is a mess.

Shoup (www.shoupparts.com) has a considerable collection of disk bearings and mountings sorted on paper by size or disk vendor. Few general purpose bearing stores have bearings with hex or square bores. More disks use square than hex shafts. Their printed catalog is better than their search engine, but a phone call may work better. Same for Baum.

This is where i get my hard to find bearings.

Looks as if they have a Canada branch also.  You may need to know the old bearing manufacturers name. Good luck.

As Gerald said Shoups is usually good for such. Any indusrtrial bearing store can get them also but  it can be a struggle if you get the wrong counter person.  Be sure to tell them it is an ag bearing. They should be able to cross your number but here is an online catalog link for whats available from NTN. Some housings are Mfg specific, some are genaric you may or may not be able to get them anywhere but OEM

Seems I cannot open the sites for Shoup and NTAmerica. So I'll pass along the Baum and Motion telephone nubmers to the mechanic.
Thanks.

The ole "Ball-Pak" one of a kind and NLA. There are some used ones out there. When still available they were over $200. I think some one fitted a couple brgs in a tube and shimmed the bore to make a replacement.

This farmer is looking for 6 of them. He did go to a local machine shop to see about getting them made up. Apparently he can get the inner part, the bearing itself, but its securing the bearing to that outer housing, which nowadays would be a piece of steel pipe. The thin metal housing of the bearing doesn't offer much to weld too. Then there's the issue of protecting it with a rubber boot.

I'm no machinist but there are quite a few on this site that are, so... if there inner bearing is available couldn't a peice of heavy walled tubing be machined for a press fit and would that hold the bearing in place with out welding?

I found this web site as the only place that lists parts online like this bearing. I'm waiting to hear from them to see if they have what we're looking for.

Ah yes, as Steve M said, the one-of-a-kind Bal-Pak bearing.  Made of unobtanium.  May be able to find some NOS; check with Larry Swenson.  I got some from him a while back but his were with round centers versus the hex shaft.
Here is a picture of the round shaft bearing

It is 3" in diameter; center hole is 1" in diameter; the bearing is 2.5" tall.

Another view.  These are the type I got from Larry.

NOS stands for "new, old stock". It's to describe an item that has never been used but is old and may be found "in stock" in someones old parts bin.

I'll send you a PM with Larry Swenson's contact information.

Try RBI bearing on line. Hate to say it but they are Chinese that is who I get my bearings from. You may need to go through a retail dealer though. They have a gigantic selection of bearings.

Using Baums or Shoup's on line search is a waste of effort.Baum does have HEX bore disk bearings, download section Q, look at page Q1. But not wide and not 1" bore.

In section P, Baum has hex bore weldahubs. They machine nicely. I would use some bigger disk bearing (from Baum or Shoup) with a hex bore weldahub and a universal bearimg mount also found in Baum section Q. It will take some machining.

Shoup's 2006 catalog shows several bearing with 1" hex bores. Look for part numbers:HPC100GP, HPS100GP, SH10338 (replaces JD9338), SH10313 (replaces JD9313). There may be more.

I have multiple solutions. Use a machined Weldahumb with hex bore as a spacer for a disk bearing with about 1-1/2" round bore and cobble a bearing mounting from standard parts, or I have to 12' wide JD disks sitting around and I'd put one of them to work.

The 2004 Shoup spring catalog shows a 1-1/4" hex disk bearing for Allis. They may not have them now.

It would be possible to shim the 1" hex shaft to fit in Baum's bearing with a bigger hex bore, but machining a weldahub hex bore round is easier than machining its outside hex or square, but all are possible.

I tend to not use online catalogs since they rarely list everything a company has. I called both Baum and Shoup and neither were able to help me. Baum said he didn't have any hex core bearings...and I was talking with the bearing buyer who's been there 15 yrs.  And Shoup was about the same response.

I'll take the rest of your info Gerald and pass it along. Sounds do-able. Thanks.

I was at their site trying to locate a dealer but there's no listing for Allis Chalmers products. If it falls under another category I don't know what that would be.

Agco no longer wants to acknowledge that Allis or Gleaner ever had a history before Massey Ferguson.  Anyway here is a link to a forum supporter that is an Allis Dealer
http://www.sandylakeimp.com/  They have good people in there that will help you out.  you will probably need the model of the disc as well.

Rub those sales kid's noses in those part numbers. One for disks, the rest for planters and corn heads that very often use hex shafts to allow moving units to change row spacing. It might well take a pair of corn head bearings, like the ones that cross to JD numbers to handle the disk load.

Another practical alternative but not cheap would be to replace shafts, disks, and all the bearings with the more common square disk shafts. Shoup has those.

I find MORE parts in the downloaded printed catalog from Baum than I can find with their computer search because their search engine is pretty bad and you have to know ALL of its nuances and stupidities to find even common stuff. Their printed catalogs are good, plus are thick and I think complete. The sections I have downloaded search very well in Adobe Acrobat.

Shoup's search is even poorer and I won't bother to bring it up. I'll dig out a printed catalog instead and probably should go ask for the latest since I've not bought from there in a while and have moved, I don't have one for 2012. They usually issue two a year, spring has more planter parts, fall has more combine parts, both are usually pretty good in tillage parts and I find parts in the printed catalog ten times faster than in their on line trash.

I could be persuaded to sell or swap my JD disks.

Gerald J.

JD 7000 planters use a 1" hex shaft and have hex bearings in then they have differant mounting clamps than you have pictured. I loaded six of the planters for scrap last year and they had good bearings in them. I used a 1" wrench to turn the shafts so I could save the gear box for a couple other farmers. We hauled the last one in this spring didn't get squat for it but after driving around it for most of a year it was nice tohave it gone.

This place has hex bearings.  They show size over 1" id, you'd have to contact them to see what widths they carry.  I found several sources by googling "bearing with hex inner race".  Apparently they are still used so it's just a matter of finding them.  If they don't carry a width you need, you might try doubling up a thinner size

the bearing is ROUND the center here is a hex inner sleeve. Press the inner sleeve out, then the bearing and replace as in the 70330133. Less than $100 to put/press in 2 brgs. Save one spacer to put between the 2 new brgs add a flat washer on each side as a dirt shield. Will last years..
When told "it's not the money,it's the principle", remember, it's always the money..
