so im stuck between a rock and a hard place.... do i put the WC im doing back to exactly how it was, with a magneto, or do i keep the distributor on that my great grandfather installed? this is more a gift than anything to my grandfather and im having a really tough time deciding... what do you think?
Great-granfather's WC---- hopefully many more to come!

If it is a gift to your Grandfather keep the distributor on it. Apparently that is the way he wanted it.

I agree, keep it the way Grandpa left it to you....  At some point in time, you MAY want to change it over, but I'd leave it for now.

I have had the same thoughts you are having in the past. On one hand I want to restore a tractor to it original condition to preserve farming history, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that field repairs and farmer "upgrades" are also a part of farming history. In my opinion your choice is a little more clear. I think if your Great Grandpa converted it you should leave it that way.

I agree keep the distributor on it, what distingishes his tractor from others was the way he changed it to suit him, same with visable repairs and minor damage.
 
Every dent and ding has a story. While I repair or replace badly damaged or rusted sheet metal I don't sweat the small stuff, it tells a story and someone may recognise one of my old tractors by the dent they put in it when they were a kid. LOL
 
If everyone did a perfectly "correct" restoration it would be real boring to go to a tractor show. I would not want to see 20 absolutely identical WD45s or any thing else in a row.

one thing that you may want to consider if you convert to a mag is that you don't need to maintain a 6v battery which have a history of a relativley short life,  especially if the tractor will sit inactive for long periods of time.  Dick
