    Posted: 13 Dec 2011 at 11:06am
Hey All,

I have been searching high and low for information about Allis Chalmers tractors and implements since I joined this site a few months ago. Other than the very knowledgeable folks here, a few websites here and there, and some books that I have found, there doesn't seem to be a website that gives a comprehensive overall history of Allis Chalmers with pictures of everything that is easy to navigate and provides a complete picture.

I know Norm Swinford's books are referred to as the "holy grail" of AC information but they are out of print and not available digitally.

Do any of you know of such a site? It will probably be an ambitious undertaking, but I was pondering making one. The domain name "allischalmershistory" is available. What do you all think? I have a programming background, so building the site won't be an issue, just gathering all the information.

If you build it, they will come. Or should I say the information will come. Maybe all the people here could pass info on to you to load to the site.

Heres a link to the Timeline by Glen Fetty.  I don't know Glen, but I'm sure glad he put this together, lots of history there.
if that link doesn't work, heres the same text from Steve(Ill) from this site that he posted back in April.

There are no intentions to detract any attention away from this forum. Just looking for input if this would be a helpful addition and if there was any desire to see such a site.

I say go for it Tim.

He would basically, be creating an online version, of the "Allis Chalmers tractor data" book.

Well, if you are ready for the challenge, Tim. You do know how many things Allis Chalmers was into, right ? This will be a huge project.

Yeah, I know they were pretty diverse. I would divide it into groups and tackle one section at a time, starting with Ag. This will be a long term project and as I acquire information (and verify it), I will get it posted.

I am always up for a good challenge. :)

Guys, Thats the beauty of database driven websites, you basically build one template then use database records to fill in the template. The initial template is a little more difficult to build than a standard web page, but the end result is one page that can give the appearance of hundreds of pages.

on a side note, could you imagine the hundreds of volumes of information you could put together just from this forum over the years? if you put together everything about everything it would take as many years as this forum has been in existence- specs, part numbers, photos, repair instructions, hints, history, technical knowledge, sources for parts, stories, rare and special tractors/parts/attachments....whew!

YES, Do it!!  I find that I have a hard time looking for things on the site.  You do a search and can't find what you are looking for, even after KNOWING that it was there just a few weeks ago.  Parts numbers are hard to look up, especially when you don't have the parts books.  I think it would be a wonderful addition.  BUT OH, the work involved....

If you are going to do a history be sure to read the book "An Industial Heritage" published in 1976 by the Milwaukee County Historical Society.
Nothing is impossible if it is properly financed

Thanks for all the replies. I am beginning to move forward on the website. I haven't decided exactly what all it will entail in the end but that will be the enjoyable part. Feel free to forward links to any websites or recommend any books that I should gather up for this project.

Once I have the general layout done, I am going to start with their Ag division since that is what I am most familiar with and then move on from there.

I currently have: Allis-Chalmers Farm Equipment 1914-1985 by Norm Swinford, Allis-Chalmers Farm Tractors and Crawlers Data Book by Terry Dean, and a handful of equipment manuals. As I come across more AC books, I will pick them up as well.

I second this book. This is a must for the full AG history on Allis. Much more knowledge in that book, than any other AC book as far as history.

Just looked for this book, WOW......gotta be a typo on the price!!!!

No kidding, huh! I was able to order it by phone from the Milwaukee Historical Society for $19.95 shipped. If anyone else is interested, the link is: http://www.milwaukeehistory.net/museum/museum-store/

I have this book and can atest to the information within. It does seem to jump back and forth as far as time periods though, which makes it somewhat hard to look up info quickly, IMO. It would be nice if someone would do a Volume II and finish the history.

Progress is moving forward. I have purchased the domain name and loaded the "under construction" home page for www.allischalmershistory.com . I have decided on a layout and a rough plan for moving forward. I am now moving into the data collection phase. As I stated previously, I will be starting with farm equipment and branching out from there. I have collected the following books:

* Allis-Chalmers Farm Equipment 1914-1985 by Norm Swinford
A Guide to Allis-Chalmers Farm Tractors by Norm Swinford
Allis-Chalmers Tractors and Crawlers (Illustrated Buyer's Guide) by Terry Dean
Allis-Chalmers Farm Tractors and Crawlers Data Book by Terry Dean
An Industrial Heritage: Allis-Chalmers Corporation by Walter F. Peterson
* The Allis-Chalmers Story by C.H. Wendel
* Vintage Allis-Chalmers Tractors by Chester Peterson Jr. & Lynn K. Grooms
* Allis-Chalmers Tractors: History of Advance-Rumely, Monarch Crawlers, Allis-Chalmers Tractors & Implements by C.H. Wendel

The ones with the asterisk are scanned copies of books I made from the local library. If anyone has an extra copy of any of these and doesn't want a small fortune like the sellers on the Internet, I would gladly purchase a copy from you.

I have downloaded all the Nebraska test reports for all AC tractors and crawlers tested and found a couple advertising brochures as well. If anyone has any scanned brochures or ads related to any AC equipment, I would be glad to collect those as well. I am also looking for first hand images of any and all AC equipment to use on the site. I would like first hand images with the submitter's full name (for recognition) only please. I do not need to get in a copyright tussle with anyone.

Any comments, suggestions, images, or scanned documents are greatly appreciated and can be made through this forum or emailed to webmaster[at]allischalmershistory[dot]com .

Thank you for having me on your site. I recently bought what I think is an old Allis Chalmers Ca gas operated tractor. I`m not sure of it`s age but I think it was built in the fifties. Could you please tell me what oil goes in the transmission, rear differential and if there is a 3rd hydraulic oil for the rear lift? Thank you

Bob.... next time start your own post and you get more replys.... The CA has a common transmisison, differential , hydraulic system. You will see 3 pipe plugs on the bottom of the cases  under the seat / platform area (BOTTOM).... You should put about 8-9 quarts of Universal Tractor FLuid into the fill hole by your left foot. UTF is a 20 wt hudraulic fluid made for MOST new tractors.  You can get at Wal Mart, Farm Store, Auto Stores.

The FINAL DRIVE case is a sheetmetal pan on each final case.. sets inside the wheel rim area.. Should be a 3/8 pipe plug somewhere to FILL.. You have to remove the little steel pan to empty and clean.. Originally the small tractors had a 90wt gear lube in them.. Later ones might have used the UTF fluid... Only takes less than a quart on each side.

Only other oil is the motor. Originally they were 10w in winter and 30wt in summer.. These days most people use an automotive 10w 30 oil..  Regular detergent oils will help clean the motor and keep it in good condition.
