American Motors had assembly plants in Wisconsin, so when growing up, we did see a fair number of AMC’s around, not a majority by any means, but you definitely saw one everyday.
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

Back in the late 70s/early 80s, we had this ol' long-footed redneck gal that worked at the local sewing factory, some 1,200 women with a huge parking lot with some 1,200 cars.

One day, she called the shop and said "my car is sitting in the parking lot with a flat tire; I need you guys to take care of it, whatever it takes, and have it ready to roll by quit time at 4:PM."

When asked what kind and color, she just said "all you need to know is that it is the ugliest car in the lot".

When the two work-hands we sent down there returned, one of them said "she wasn't lying; it is probably the ugliest car I ever saw".

The car ----- an AMC Pacer; it looked like a big glass bubble on wheels.

Lineup of Rare Antique Cars


These old cars have been a landmark ever since I was a kid.

It was a well known fact that none of these cars could be bought; they just sat here for decades.

They have recently lined them up and there appears to be less than a third as many as I remember being here in the past.

I was thinking probably Chevrolet due to the ridge above the door handle and the "rounded" top above the windshield, but I was not sure.

My Great-grandfather, Joseph Marmaduke "Joe Duke" Grider replaced his Straight-8 Cadillac with a Straight-8 Packard and had to lengthen his garage by two-feet in order to close the doors; that garage stood until the new US127 Bypass took it and the big 3-story mansion house in the early 1970s; I can well remember the very obvious extension to the garage.

I figure the little trailer hauled Kayaks and Canoes to this launch point and they have another vehicle at their downstream destination.

Something I have always wondered; all my life, I have seen little cars being flat towed behind motorhomes, campers, and the like by people who are most likely not mechanical geniuses; for the last thirty years or more, those little cars have been front wheel drive; do they just put the thing in Neutral and take off down the road ?

I have seen many of these towed cars that were automatics - many being towed for thousands of miles.

I know that most big trucks, even for a short distance, you had better take the driveshaft loose at the rear-end; and, it isn't a bad idea even with ton trucks and pickups.

Most of these puny little cars don't even have a driveshaft to take loose.

What, if anything, do people do to these little cars to ready them for towing ?

It couldn't be too involved as you see people unhook them from the tow vehicle and head down the road and I never see them do anything special.

My understanding is some of them are towable just by placing in neutral
