Been running this machine since 21, last fall the pulley on the water pump/ fan failed. Cut into the the front cover a bit. Put new parts on from 8.3 Cummings and finished last fall. Yesterday the new pully failed. Exploded, again.
The radiator is clean, the machine runs in the low green in beans under load. We clean combine daily with air. What could be causing factory water pump/ fan pulley to fail. Thanks LeonB

Well 1st is the fan pulley, fan hub, or the water pump what failed. You have kinda talked in circles. The water pump doesn't have a replaceable pulley and doesn't carry the fan.

That confused me somewhat too. From the cutting into the cover comment I'd guess water pump bearing went out. As for a new one lasting under a year, assuming same mode of failure I'd suggest either belt tension way too high or major imbalance in the fan/hub assembly causing excessive vibration and killing the bearings.
But as mentioned, we need a little more specifics to really help further. What part failed last time (pulley that the belt rides on, fan/hub assembly that bolts on or the bearing in the water pump itself)? And is it the same failure this time round? Photos may also help if you're not 100% sure.

Local independent who cares for area Whites says the pulley eating the cover is common on that Cummins. Don't remember what failed to cause it.

I did misspeak, it does not have anything to do with the water pump just the fan and the pulley for the ac. Yes the part we put on last year was from a Cummins dealer as is the one we just put on this morning. The center of the pulley breaks out around the bolt hole circle and then plays hell with the front cover until the belt shreds. Sounds like I may be replacing this pulley annually as a precautionary measure.
I will try to do a better job of blowing out and around the front of the engine when I do the rest of it. Thanks guys Leon B |

It's like they need a reinforced stamping to add on like the ole Chevys did

Some applications use a reinforcement ring on the pulley. If your Cummins distributor is like our local one…good luck! It will take a competent parts guy to find it! If I had a sn to use I would certainly offer it but no longer have the notes from when I worked there

I think I have one of the reinforcement rings but can’t seem to find it. If I run across it I will let you know if there is a number on it

So we did a little searching around this morning while waiting for the beans to dry out. We found that Case IH had the 8.3 in a 2388 combine and it had the same issues that I had. Case IH made a replacement pulley that is one mm
thicker than the original. Everything else should be the same, bolt pattern and diameter. So we called our nearest Case IH dealer and ordered one, we'll see what it looks like when we get it. Leon B |
