Shut down my CA today after about two hours of mowing hay. It sat for about a half hour and when I tried to restart it was seized. Had plenty of oil pressure and water temp was fine. Any ideas on what to look for first would be appreciated. It didn't knock or do anything out of the ordinary.

Any chance your starter just jammed against the ring gear?

Best thing to do is to describe why you believe it's seized. Were you observing oil pressure and water temp before you shut it off? mnoonan has a good suggestion, and it's easy to check. Just loosen the bolt that locks your starter in place and wiggle the starter, then retighten and try again. Good luck, and please let us know how you make out.

I've got no idea why it locked up. Like I said it didn't make any noise or anything. It was so hot today I kept a close eye on temp so I'm sure that wasn't it I'm also sure oil and pressure was up. I tried using that crank to start it also and it didn't budge. I can look at starter but don't think thats the problem, be nice if it was.

If you didn't do anything to the tractor after shutting it down, I would bet the starter gear jammed in the ring gear when you tried to start it. I had a similar problem once after remove a home made hitch I had on the side of the tractor. I had to have a longer bolt to mount the hitch and when I removed the hitch I put the bolt back in the hole. It just happened to snug up the same time it bottomed against the ring gear. Took me a little while to figure that one out and I never admitted it to anybody for some time after. LOL

If the starter is not the problem I wonder if the head gasket wouldnt have leaked and filled a cylinder up with antifreeze?  Pull the plugs out and see if it spins over, if one shoots out water you know the answer.  I highly doubt this as I have never heard of it before in one of these engines, but there is a first time for anything.

I had that problem with a WC, it ran fine, then if you shut it off, it would lock up......about 30 mins later you could start up and run it all over again. The problem turned out to be........sand and sediment from stream/pond? water over many years had formed a layer around the bottom of the sleeves causing them to overheat 9and eventually crack around the base of the sleeve). On shut off, the pictons would seize at the bottom of the stroke until the moteo had cooled enough......ended up having to wash out att the crud and replace 2 sleeves..........motor runs good as new now.......

If it's electric start, then It's probably the starter locked in the ring gear. If so then you would not be able to turn it with the hand crank.

While it has never happened to me, I've heard many times about the starter jamming 2 teeth on top of each other causing the engine to appear seized.

My starter on my WC is quite inclined to lock in the ring gear especially if the batter is discharged a bit it always happened at the most inconvenient times Kev

I would never hammer and pry on an engine with the starter pinion jammed in the ring gear. You will only cause more problems or at least add to the original problem. Loosening the starter setscrew and removing the starter would be my first choice. If the problem is recurrent, you need to find the cause, most likely a bad spot in the ring gear and or a worn or damaged bendix.

Kent, I'm glad you cleared that up. I had an image in my mind of a 16 pound mall and a 6 foot frost bar in the hands of a guy laying on his back prying and pounding on the flywheel. LOL

One more thing to suggest, did you shut off the gas when you turned off the tractor?  Hard to believe, but I have had my D14 (with a brand new carb) leak gas past the carb, up the intake, and into a cylinder before.  When I went to start it after a few hours, it wouldnt turn over.  Eventually, the gas leaked past the rings, and after an oil change and a vow to always turn off the gas, its been just fine.  Worth a shot to pull the plugs and see if that makes any difference as well.

My D14 starter locked up ocassionally.  With the switch off, I'd put the tractor in 4th gear and rock it by hand until I'd see the fan turn a bit.  Worked every time.  Found out the starter retaining bolt had worn a bit.  Reground the point on the bolt, and retightened.  No more trouble.
I had the same trouble as Dave Everett with my RC. Didn't figure that one out until the sleeves cracked.
Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives.
