Just a reminder to all of us out there working on our equipment to be extremely careful. I know we all get complacent, we all take that shortcut thinking it will never get us. Unfortunately that complacency finally caught up with my grandfather yesterday. We lost a great man and a wonderful teacher yesterday. My family will never be the same after losing him. Please everybody no starting those tractors without being in the seat! It's not something you want your family to go through.

Sorry to hear about it but thanks for posting as a reminder to the rest of us. We get in to much of a hurry and as we get older we sometimes miss the little things. I lost my Dad in a tractor rollover 17 years ago. Tom

Sorry to hear. Could you share vague details to serve as a lesson to the rest of us?
I had a hurried moment this spring and assumed the 7000 was in park and started it with the push button from the ground. Thankfully she was throttled waaay down and the planter marked caught my pickup tire and didn't shear the pin. I got really lucky and swatted the shutoff. From what we can see and things we know I can say he was working on an old wheel rake that was hooked to his 180. He was replacing teeth. The rake was on the ground and from what we can tell he went to the right side of the tractor as that door was open and went to start it to raise the rake. Unfortunately he failed to check for neutral. The tractor travelled across the yard where it ran into a row of bales and stalled. The renter of the farm ground found him. This is the saddest I've been in many years. We can only take comfort in knowing he was truly doing what he loved and we know he was met by Grandma, his loving wife, whom we lost over 20 years ago. I'm grateful to have known him well in my 28 years here and am very lucky to have had breakfast with him, one uncle and my Dad just a few hours before the accident. I seen him as his happy smiling self that morning!

So sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, my grandpa has a habit of doing that occasionally as well, but I understand the safety issue. I could easily start all my tractors from the ground, but I seldom do. I always think about stories like that, and that's enough to make me step up on the platform.

Very sorry for your loss, gerkendave. About 15 years ago I just about met my demise starting a tractor from the ground. I won't do that again, and hope my kids have gotten it instilled into their heads not to do it either. Darrel

Sorry for your loss,, that's a thing that may have saved a minute but look at the out come, I'm guilty of doing it too, only once I had a very close call and have all clutch safety switches hooked up now

Prayers for you Dave & your families. Sorry for your loss. Yes, the sad truth is the reality that these older tractors easily allow for starting them while standing on the ground. I also appreciate your safe reminder.
