is there a separate filter for the backhoe? or maybe one of the restrictors plugged or collapsed? also...did you put all the right hoses back on to where they is sposed to go?

Hey Good buddy,,,,There is only one restriction orifice in the bank of 6 control valves,,,and it "IN" in the valve for the swing ,,but I don't think it is the culprit as the swing WILL move to the left like it susspossed to and maybe even a little too much,,!! The only result of having these two hoses reversed is that the control lever would be backwards as well,,,,right,,,???
Shameless,,,do you think ole Joe would haphazardly reinstall them brand new, expensive hoses just whereever,,,,????Wink  As a fact of the matter,,,I used a wide tip sharpie to number "EVERY" connection and every hose end before removing from the control valve bank as well as the cylinder location, so I can state, I will wager my next Social Security check,,,,,,agin' just one of your buried cash cans that they are hooked up correctly,,,,,,???Wink,,,,but I DO APPRECIATE your input and concern,,tho. You can see my numberin on some of the pics I posted beforeClapClap
On the filter question, there was NOT a filter on the tractor when I bought it,,,,,but I DID install one after I redid the hydraulic lines to add the bigger selector valve and the two new quick couplers.
Shore hopin some of them guys wakin up got some feedback this mornin,,,,,,Clap

Joe are there more then one cylinders controlled by the single valve to swing the boom? If you cross the lines between two different cylinders Shameless is right that it can cause some odd hydraulic behavior beyond the simple problem of direction that you see when you hook a valve up backwards.   When ever I have trouble with hydraulics the first thing I check is did I cross the ends of any of the cylinders in pairs by mistake.   Not looking for that S'S check or anything just that I think most backhoes are all hydraulic and it is the most common hydraulic problem.

Hey Dan,,you may have a point there,,,as it is POSSIBLE that the hoses were hooked up WRONG to start with when I bought the tractor,,,and I just duplicated the PO's mistake, but not knowin' enough bout the tractor way back then,,is why I did number the inlet and outlet ports of every valve as well as every port at every cylinder,,,before I removed each hose from either end. The valve that controls the swing is the only one of the 6 that had 3/8" fittings and hoses where the other 5 control valves had 1/2" fittings/hoses. Clear as mud,,???Wink
Wanting to be sure I am sayin somethin correct, I went out this mornin and operated The other functions to make sure the directional action is correct from the hand levers to the various cylinders. That buried can of dollar bills is lookin better all the time,,,,,WinkWink

Joe are there two cylinders or one controlled by the swing valve? I am guessing if there are two cylinders there are two tee's that split the lines out of the control valve. This is where I have found most of the mistakes people get the line going to the cylinders from the tee wrong. Does all kinds of funky stuff if your oil has to flow through one cylinder to get to the other cylinder ot something weird like that.

My guess is that you have 2 cylinders one extends when the other retracts and that either one cylinder is bad or they are plumbed wrong.

NO,,Dan,,,this "tower" as I'm calling it is what operates the swing and there are NO external cylinders for the swing,,,it is all controlled inside this "tower" with some sort of internal hydraulic motor operating some gears,,,, maybe. You can see a pic of this "tower" on page 5 of this thread,,,,big bulky cylindrical thing bout 12" diameter and bout 14" high,, settin right under the control levers.,,,,,

OK,,,UPDATE # 99,,,which means I am almost done with this "14" project,,,and I'm kinda proud how it turned out,,,,and since my Email to the president may leave me no choice,,,I may have to give it away,,,,, Lots and LOTs of hours to get it to this point,,,and I already gots a job for it right on the ranch,,,,!!!!

This is MY version of how to repair the hydraulic pump drive shaft where it will outlast the pump.

The inboard outrigger pins and their supports were wallowed out very bad. I machined new pins and housings and replaced both.

main boom cylinder repairs needed a new head and pusher made, so,,I get to fire up the lathe again,,,,,

I am especially proud of this one,,the wood on the quick steer is a chunk of pecan from my smoke wood pile and just gave me a reason to play with the lathe again,,,,,,
Got to take the wife to Walmart,,,will post rest of them later

The d14 did NOT have a filter for the fluid so I installed new filter and ran all new 3/4" piping including a new full bore 3/4" diverter valve to make sure there is no restriction for pump.

The Wife really wanted to sew this for her part but her stroke related issues did not allow her to complete,,so I finished the seat up for her,,,don't look too bad,,,,

I've always had trouble judging the angle of the bucket,,so I designed this little addition

This tractor was originally bought by Bureau of Reclamation for the Forest Service up in Fort Stanton and it had a hard life diggin holes, ditches in the mountains,,so no small wonder on beatin them bushins up,,,,,
Went to the local machine shop and bought a chunk of bearing bronze to make the 6 bushings and like to fell over,,,,,,$112 for 13" of 2"X1 1/4" bronze,,,gosh dang,,,!!! gonna have to sneak back up to Blair and dig up another can of money while our buddy is gone to Hutch,,,,,,,,Wink,,,that'll teach him for goin up thar 'thought me,,,,,LOLClap
That little job and the Rotary swing issue and I'll be done with this project,,,,HMmmmm,,,wonderin what happened to ole JoeO,,,,??? Are Ya thar,,Joe,,??

Joe if you time it right the washout by the new green farmer improvements might just leave some of them cans of cash floating on the surface... otherwise guess you just take that backhoe with you and give her a good test run...
Great work on this one it is amazing how much time and effort it takes to bring one of these old tractors back.

I didnt read this entire post, but I think that rotary swing unit is a Cessna. MinnPar can get you parts. Also Massey Fergeson used that same unit on some of their hoes and their parts I think are still listed and much more affordable than ragco. I think the Allis 615 hoe was using the same unit. More than likely a simple blown seal. Good luck and let us know. I am REALLY IMPRESSED!!!! Its been a long, tough road for you in many ways!

Yes, MinnPar CAN get parts. I would think any large Massey dealer could help. Its just a rotary power divider. Ask over on the industrial side of this forum. We discussed this a couple of years ago. Look up "615 backhoe". There are a couple of guys that own one and know. I was going to buy a 615 that had that malady and I did some research. By the time I got the ball$ to pull the trigger and buy it, It was gone after sitting in the same spot 5 years.

I'm goin ahead and replace all the pins and bushings so I don't have to mess with it again,,,,,,,Got all the old bushings knocked out and bores cleaned up and sittin on ready,,,,,and waitin on the new bushings,,,,,
That bronze sure does machine easy but that chit flies all over the place,,,!!! I'm having to vacuum to keep it from workin into where the cuttings don't need to be,,,,,

     UPDATE # 100
    Well,,I'm back,,again,,Wink
I finally got the bucket all lashed up on the Mark IV Backhoe,,,,ClapWasn't really hard,,but did take a lot of time what with having to machine lots of pieces. I went ahead and replaced all 4 of the pins and all 9 of the bushings. I was really surprised the bores were in very good shape and only had to reame two of the bores and just machine oversized bushings. The hoe operates very quiet now with no "clanking" when you work it around.
I want to give a "shout out" for JoeO(CMO) who sent me a much needed manual for the Mark IV Rotary Cylinder,,,which is next on the list of things to do.  I had been kinda dreadin opening that thing up,,not knowin whats inside,,,but "GET BACK",,it is fixin to get operated on,,,,,,,ClapClap
   THANK YOU,,Joe,,,!!!!Clap

Hey Joe O,,,good to hear from you,,,yeah, I got the manual yesterday PM and sure glad you chimed in. I had downloaded another manual from a guy on Yesterdays Tractors and although it is for a Cessna cylinder, it was for a Massy Ferguson and was some different on the internals,,,,,,
Right now I made a thing-a-ma-jig to hold the main shaft "down" while tryin to remove the top plate,,,but DANG that plate is stuck,,,I left quite a bit of tension on it last night so hopin it breaks loose today,,don't really want to use the torch and possibly ruin the inner seals. This Rotary cylinder does not have any external leaks now,,,so I hope I don't make it start leakin,,,!!!!! Been readin lots bout why these Rotary Cylinders "drift" and maybe I can fix that along with the swing hanging up on right hand swing.
Again,,Thanks Joe,,,,Clap By the way,,,,what you doin up this early or is it way late,,,,,LOLLOL

Yeah,,Dan,,,they all got plenty of grease,,,Clap,,,but I''m a stickler for detail,,so I always pump till the grease comes out both ends,,,then wipe the excess off as well as the zerk too,,,Clap It's kibda odd in that the front part of the backhoe,,,the pins look like brand new and all have nice snug fits with LOTS of old grease,,,but the bucket pins and bushings was just about washed out,,,and very little grease showin,,,???/???? Guess it was too far for the PO to walk to the bucket,,,,Wink

Wow you wipe it back off.... want to come and grease my stuff for me? Mine all have grease smears all around the pins and anywhere else it pops out... Seems like you can't grease anything without walking away covered with grease and I don't try to clean it up you must be covered... lol
