This 45 has set 30-35 years and I removed the shifting tower to find the 3 shafts the shifting forks are on are VERY rusted . How do I get them out to really clean them up . Are there plugs on the one end to drive them out ? Again very rusty . I clamped it to my work bench with the shift lever in and can't move them any direction . Sugarmaker I saw you working on one of these . Help !!

There is a thread I had started that may help. Also try to get a good service manual. Yes you can drive the shift rods out but if they are that rusty you may want to soak it in something for a while??
this may work? This is not my thread but has some pictures: https://www.allischalmers.com/forum/gear-slides-coming-out-of-alignment_topic177722_post1504292.html?KW=wd45+shift+tower#1504292" rel="nofollow - https://www.allischalmers.com/forum/gear-slides-coming-out-of-alignment_topic177722_post1504292.html?KW=wd45+shift+tower#1504292 Regards Chris

No such thing as a dumb question, welch plugs will be driven out by the shift rails. I suggest looking at Chris's pictures as they are great. If your parts are as rusty as you say I would start by soaking the whole thing in "evaporust" for a couple of days. I will caution you to be careful when driving the rails out of the detent balls as they are under spring pressure, WEAR SAFETY GLASSES cover whole with a rag. Keep us posted !!

Jim, I had never had one apart. It was a little liker doing a carb or small engine. Bunch of mechanical things that need to be removed in the right order. Yes the welsh plugs will pop out with the rails or a drift. We need some pictures! How is the rest of the tractor? Regards, Chris

Motor will turn over with starter . So rebuilt carb and going To get a battery and tune the motor and try to start in a few days . I'm on kidney dialysis 4 days a week so am a very slow worker. That's 4 days a week . I need a 14.9-28 rear tire . No luck so far . I do need to rebuild the water pump or get a rebuilt one . No water in the oil ! Leaked out of water pump . Radiator seems good . Tranny gears look good and hand clutch snaps good . Lots to go before really know what I've got .
Felt a lot better 10 years ago when I did the 17 ! But determined to get it running . I drove this as a kid for 3 years Jim

Yep, take your time Jim. You've got a childhood memory, a one owner and Dad's tractor. You're lucky, they're priceless that way. Could you use electrolysis on it? Otherwise my old standby is Acetone and ATF in equal parts.

I'm ready to put it back together after cleaning everything . I ordered springs and balls and a new pin for it as the others were very rusted . Got a shop manual and maintenance manual coming also . The oil bath air breather has dead mud dobbers in it . Screen will soak in gas in a 5 gallon bucket for a long time also . All for now , thanks for the free offer on a trans ! Slow moving Jim !

Sugar maker . The pin in the middle shaft was not in the shaft when I removed it . I was watching for it closely i have no idea where it could be . I've used a magnet every where in side and out of tower on floor with no results . I thought I ordered one but it didnt come with the other parts . Do you have detentions of it . Jim

Jim, I think that illusive pin hid on me too. Cant remember how or what, but I think Dr Allis got me on the right track. Sorry i have slept since then and cant remember what I had for breakfast. But that pin has to be in there to keep you from shifting into two gears at the same time. Might be a picture in my thread? Manual may have a drawing of it? Not much help to you this morning! Regards, Chris
