These examples are exactly why I look at how something is engineered and designed so that if needed it can be either completely eliminated or  redesigned to use a more common far cheaper and possibly even better alternative component in its place.

Not much different than the typical scraper/salvage yard operators.

If it's hard to find and you need it it's worth anywhere from 50 - 200+% of its former new price even if though it's clearly 50 -90% worn out.

I had this chat with one of the workers at one of our more local salvage yards not to long ago.

----------
anyways, as for our local place, for as long as I can remember I hated going there just because of the rip off prices they had on worn out stuff that I know damn well from first hand experience bidding against the guy at auctions he didn't get for pennies on the dollar.
My first experience with him years ago was while bidding on an old square baler we wanted for parts.  He outbid me at something like $200.  I let him have it for that figure that he was just parting it out anyway and I could get the parts for less.
I tracked him down later and asked if he was parting it out and of course he was so I asked if he would sell me the few parts I needed.   Sure he would!  $400 and I had to pull them myself before his guy load it up and took it back with them.

His comment was, "A guys gotta make money you know. Take it or leave it." and he walked away.
----------

Fortunately the guy working there that day knew the stories like meine way too well and gave me the stuff I wanted for less than what the online guys wanted.

For a place where 5 years ago a guy had to stand in line to get help I was there for over an hour and I think I was probably the only customer on the property.

Sounds like the owners own greed came back around to bite them in the ass now that most everyone has internet and that gives them access to salvage dealers who are professional businessman that run highly competitive business operations.

If they want $500 for an old gear from some old tractor they have had sitting in their cluttered shelves for who knows how long and a business online has the same gear all clean and neatly organized for $150 but takes 3 - 4 days and $50 in shipping to get who do you suppose is going to get the business?

Heck yea, I'll wait 3 - 4 days to get a clean good condition gear that comes with a warranty over some old dirty crusty one that sells 'as is where is' for over 3x the price.

Over the years one thing most all tractor/equipment dealerships that went out of business had one thing in common at their sale lots of parts from way back that never sold.

Picked up both the ALT and Starter rebuilt today. $150 for the starter $50 for the Alternator. To think I drove by the Starter and Alternator shop on my way to the AGCO dealer 60 miles up the road. Glad as heck I stopped in on the way home.
Tomorrow when it's cool I will put the parts back on the Little Massy and put it back to working .

re:

hahahaha...

really ? Obvious the CPA has NEVER ever worked in the REAL World ! parts on the shelf that long should be discounted 80-100% to GET RID OF THEM ! They're taking up valuable space, space that SHOULD be MAKING money NOT costing more. I got  a killer deal on Lexan Twinwall Polycarb sheeting. Miscuts, stored 'on the shelf', about 3000 sq ft of it for the cost of shipping after I said...you could use that space for real products that MAKE you money... mgr agreed. he calls me every so often asking if I need anything !

Also the CPS doesn't know about 'turns'. It means how often and when to reorder stock based upon sales. I cut BASIC code 40 years ago on a TRS80 to help local hobby shop. He made an extra 15-20% in just a few months, paid me in RC toys, beer and pizza !

Finally... I bought a NEW master cylinder for my 57 Willys PU one day, counter guy says $200, I said $75 as it had an inch of dust on it and asked him WHEN was the last ime he sold one? If you sell me this NOW, you can use the space for better sellers. I got it for $75.

Two other things I KNOW
1) you can't sell it, if it's NOT out on display
2) you can't sell it, if it's over priced

Yeah I've done the parts locater too. Thing that ticked me off was they found a dealer with the part, I call dealer, they dig around in the attic for a while, say they've had the part 20 years, I ask how much and they give the current retail price. Even though the msrp may have been half the cost when they got it.

Ok on hard parts the age doesn't matter, but were talking about rubber gaskets and stuff that can potentially deteriorate, and should be sold at discount or at least the original price...

I've had AGCO dealers run part locaters for me a lot. I've bought several obsolete parts that way. I've had more than one run the locators.

You have to shop around. I needed a cross and bearing for a u-joint on a Bush Hog with a B and P driveline last year. Found it a the local Deere dealer for a quarter of the price and no shipping. Some of the problem is some BTOs just call and get it without regard to price. The little guy has to watch the money closer.

My price is $46.70 on that gasket. I guess I will be making another call to AGCO and tell them they need to fix that price!

As Albert said there are some dealers that put way to much on their parts too. Which is too bad. We are suggested list and will stay suggested list.

Try Baum Hydraulics for the cylinder seals. http://www.baumhydraulics.com

There was an article in Electrical Apparatus magazine a couple months ago by a CPA talking about charges for parts stocked. Electrical Apparatus is aimed at electric motor repair shops. In that article the CPA suggested that parts on the shelf a few years should be priced at 5 or 6 times their original cost. I haven't checked lately but the contents of that magazine issue don't seem to have been placed on line. I would include a link to the article if I found it on line. Anyway its clear that the bean counters at Agco feel the same. I have felt its a feeling that the parts are occupying space that they feel should have holding gold bullion rising in value like farm land prices over the past 25 years.

I left both the Starter and Alt at Longview Starter and Generator yesterday to be rebuilt. Pick them up today at noon on the way home after Chemo.
The owner is old like me and I trust he knows what he is doing or he wouldn't be in tne starter generator alternator business in the same location as long as he has.

Well,Ken,,,I can certainly relate to some seemingly price gouging for AGCO parts. I been lookin for a seal kit for the Rotary swing Cylinder for the Mark IV for weeks and finally caught a Lady at AGCO that would take the time to try to help me. For one thing,as BIG a corporation as AGCO is,,,they do not have a "Locator" to see which dealer has one on the shelf,,,AGCO INSISTS you contact a dealer that services YOUR area, place an order, and wait,,,,,She told me agco DOES NOT want you contacting dealers out of your area,,,WHAT,,,???,,,
I have had NO friggin luck locating a seal kit for the  Rotary cylinder by asking for the Allis PN, so, having been told that Massey ferguson used the same Cessna Cylinder, I started trying to locate a seal kit for the MF, but there were 3 different sizes used and I have not yet found a dealer that wants to take the time to verify the seal dimensions before I place order,,,,!!! I downloaded a pic of said kit,,,and  The kits come in a clear plastic bag and seals could very easily be calipered WITHOUT opening the friggin bag,,,but I ain't fount a dealer that wants to take the time to do so,,,,ARGGGGggg,,,!!!!!
Anyway, the Lady with agco did email me back yesterday,,,and the kit PN I gave her, is available, FROM AGCO, to the tune of,,,,,,,,,,,,, $630.00,,,yes,, you heard right,,,$630,,!!!
And, what's confusing, I located a kit in Australia and one in the UK priced at 130/ pound and have been workin with two members here to verify which kits they are referring to before I place an order.
It is SO FRUSTRATING  that companies that depend on  customer sales, seem to not give a chit if they sell anything or not,,,,,,!!!Angry

OH,,by the way,,,Ken,,,Hope you are feelin better,,,how are your treatments going,,???

I had a Delco Remy starter rebuilt for one of our John Deere tractors locally. When I went to pick it up they told me they had a hard time finding parts for it because they were obsolete. They ended up getting them from a guy who buys out old shops.

My local starter/alternator shop rebuilt the Delco starter for my CAT 955l to the tune of $225. I know this is apples to oranges, but this starter is behomith, an anchor by weight, and the windings were shot.   I agree to stay away from the aftermarket starters. I bought one once to replace a Lucas for a 185. Only two of three mounting holes lined up. My guy charges $185 to rebuilt a Lucas starter which is oem for many MF models.

If it were my starter, I would take it apart and see what is wrong with it... and then go get the parts to rebuild it...
But if you don't want to mess with it, have it rebuilt by a good shop, it will be cheaper... or it use to be anyways. after market starters seem to be of lighter windings etc.

Just be glad its not a starter for an M5 MM Diesel... obsolete...

Trust me when I say, It is NOT the people behind the AGCO parts counter doing their job that I have a ounce of disrespect for in any way, shape or form. The price they Quote is what they read off the computer screen.
I will however save time and money and call ahead next time instead of driving 60 miles one way to my nearest AGCO dealer, who actually sells more Kabotas, knowing full well AGCO parts are more than likely going to be way more expensive than from other sources.
No mention was made to me today of a MF 1260 Reman starter, from this NE Texas dealer, being available for $298.67

AGCO remanufactured is $298.67 exchange with a 12 month warranty. As several know I do work in a AGCO dealer. When I read some of the post how some dealers gouge and how some have no respect for there customers it makes me sick.

I have said it a million times and I guess I will have to say it a million more.

1. Its not just AGCO
2. It pays to shop around-but sometimes you get what you paid for.  In this case I would send it to a rebuild place.  I know a great one, PM me and I will give you their contact info.  I would not buy a starter from Amazon.
3.There is no consistency in parts pricing.  I tell customers that all of the time.
4.Sometimes AGCO gets gouged from their suppliers too.
5.If a part is out of range for price we dealers do call and complain.
6.If your local dealer tries to help you please take that into consideration.
7.99% of the time OEM is a far better quality.

Please show some respect for those of us behind the counter.

I will check on that D14 manifold gasket when I get time also.
