I was on here about this a few years ago. My Series 2 D17 power steering works fine but it foams over at the fill cap when I put the amount of fluid in the bolster that the owners manual calls for. I run it a long time with it low according to the book which says fill to the top of the gear which is the only gear I can see through the fill hole with a flash light. yesterday I filled it and again it foamed over. I guess its ok to run it at a lower point. What fluid do you use. I've used lots of different fluids.

With it foaming over it's aerating the fluid, most likely on the inlet side to the pump. Check the line that connects to the bolster in front of the engine pulley to see if it's a little loose. Make sure there are no possible leaks between there and the P/S pump.

They aren't very picky about fluid. Could have been Dexron, light hydraulic oil, or universal trans/hydraulic fluid. I've heard it said most people use the universal tran/hyd fluid just for convenience.

had the exact same problem with my D15 II, replaced the power steering pump shaft seal.
it wasn't leaking externally, so i didn't expect it to be the problem at first. dan

I'm gonna need a service manual for this Series II D17 so I can work on the power steering. I have an IT manual but it sucks. This is a serial #40932 plus or minus a couple D17. Where is the best place to get an AC service manual. I have an owners manual and of course the IT manual.

Price is right. Hopefully they aren't a dirty used old manual run through a scanner. I have an original copy of the prior to series 4 from Jensales and the pictures are poor.

I have one for a B and G from Jensales, and both have terrible photos.

Your welcome. I think all the manuals you can get now where scans at some point but they have the closest to the original quality I have seen.

I have a reprint from Agco for the 200. It ain't too bad, pictures are far better than the Jensales or I T that I have seen.

Thanks to Dan I received my Agco Manual for D17's today. Pictures are real good and it is marked as an Agco Service Manual for the D17, it has all years and fueled engines.
So if I'm smart enough to use it I'll see what I can do. I appreciate the help from all of you members !!

Your welcome. Glad to hear someone is saving another one of these old tractors. The d17 is my favorite I have a serries 1 myself and it is in the middle of a motor overhaul.

before you tear this way down, might want to try an anti foaming hydraulic oil in it. most universal hydraulic oils are anti foaming.
