A friend of mine in Sweden bought some new pistons for his bike, they came with a kind of different oil ring. The wire shown in the pic fits thru holes in the "bumps" of the ring. He tried putting it together with out the wire and it will not stay in place. It seems a bit strange to have the wire laying loose in the ring - something must hold it in place. He thought maybe the wire should be crimped or bent somehow to keep it retained in the ring, but no instructions came with it. Anyone see anything like this before? The oil ring has the regular wiper rings above and below it, this is just the center section.
cheers,
Creek

The thin wire is used to help keep the ends of the spacer from overlapping.

i think it will be o.k., If i understand the way you describe it the Cummins ISX15 engines we work on at school have the same style oil ring and have nothing holding them together. pain to put in the cylinder bore if doing it by yourself.

But does the wire just "float" in the ring or does he need to crimp the ends somehow to keep it from working it's way around the ring and coming out? |

well, again if im understanding it correctly it should just float. I know the one in the Cummins floats. pressure from the ring compression should hold it in place
