Had a rough day in the shop today. Was making some new gaskets, one was for the clutch cover. As I was lowering the cover and gasket back in place I knocked one of the bolts down inside. Mad and paniced I started reaching in trying to fish it out. Finally managed to fish out the bolt with an extendable magnet the size of a pencil. In the process I knocked loose what I thought was a piece of number nine wire. I didn't think it should have been in there so I set it aside. After replacing the cover I looked over and noticed the piece I had removed. After discussing it with my father-in-law I decided to ask you guys a few questions.
What is it?
Where does it go?
And how bad have I screwed something up by taking it out?
Unfortunately I can't get the picture to upload. It says the file size is too large and I don't know what to do about it. It's a horseshoe shaped piece of metal, looks a lot like number nine wire. Please help.
Thanks as always,
Brad

Try loading your picture from photobucket.com or something similar.

Is it a piece of safety wire maybe?

Okay, somebody might have to walk me through how to upload one that way. I'm not too good at this kind of stuff. I'm just barely able to remember how to upload through this site most days.
My first thought was that it is a piece of wire somebody dropped inside trying to check the oil level. But I'm not a real mechanic and I've never seen inside a transmission before so I paniced, thinking I'd just messed something up.
Also forgot to mention, we're dealing with a WD 45 here.
Thanks,
Brad

Did you try to right click the picture and see if it show "Resize Picture"?
If it doesn't, download "Light Image Resizer" very easy to use.

I'll try downloading that. It's a WD 45.

Brad, you have the photo on your computer. Open it with "Paintbrush" .. See how big the file is... probably 3000 pixels wide or so if you have a good camera..... up in the tools at the top of page ( paintbrush) , click on RESIZE... make it 25-30% and see if the photo is reduced to something like  600 x 400 pixels.. If not, reduce again. When you get to 600 size or so, resave it to your desktop.... come back to this site and download as normal.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

640 x 480 is a nice size for this forum. I use GIMP for that sometimes.

Okay, Here goes again. Got it resized in paintbrush, hopefully it's not too small. Guess if nothing else I learned how to do this today.
Thanks,
Brad

Whatever it is, it's been there for a long time and not functioning as a useful part.

It's pretty stiff. That's what led us to start thinking it was an actual part of the clutch. Yes, it has been there a while, no it's not functioning, and no, it shouldn't have been where it was. It was just waiting to get caught in the gears inside there.
My next concern is, what's not working right because of this possibly failed part. I don't have the time, ability, or money to split the tractor and fix it. Here's hoping it turns out to be nothing in the end.
Thanks,
Brad

That realt looks like the snap ring that goes on the hand clutch. As long as your hand clutch is working properly I'd just put the cover back on and forget it. We find lots of extra parts in the tractors we've split at the farm. Left overs from previous farmer fixes.

I don't think there was any way you could have dislodged the actual wet clutch snap ring by fishing out a bolt so I would do as Dave suggests.

Brad,
Do you still have the cover off? You should be able to see the snap ring in place on the clutch. I had a hard time finding it myself until I realized it is quite large in size and diameter. Take a couple pictures of the clutch assembly and post for us. My guess is that like other your going to be fine and its a good thing to get out of there too.

The problem will come if you ever take the hand clutch out, that ring is what holds everything together.

My late grandfather told long ago of the first thing you did when buying a used early Ford car from the teens up into the 30's; check the trans for sawdust as that was apparently a "fix" for used units being sold with bad bearings that the PO or dealer did not want to fix. Said it made em run super quiet, but briefly.

Thanks guys. I'll be honest, that's a big relief for me. Chris, I had already put the cover back on before I remembered the mystery part laying on the bench. I was just glad I got my bolt back at the time and wanted to seal it up before more junk fell inside. Removing the cover again doesn't exactly fill me with warm and fuzzy feelings. The general opinion is that it probably isn't a major issue so I'm gonna just leave it at that. As far as I know the hand clutch is working, although I really haven't tested it to any degree.
I remember we changed a front tractor tire once. Dad had put them on the rims about 20 years before. We broke down the bead and inside was a red shop rag. No telling how many acres it had covered on the front of a 4020. Guess you just never know what you're gonna find. Thanks again for the help everybody.
Later,
Brad

I had that snap ring come off on my 45s live power clutch once. My boy wanted to do some bush hogging I told him to use the WF because that spring I was plowing with the 45 and I heard a noise in the torque housing and I hadn't had time to look at it but of course he put the 45 on the bush hog. I went to move the 45 one day after he used it let the clutch out even in neutral it would kill the engine the snap ring had got down in the pto gears and smashed them I to take the torch and cut the rest of the cogs off the upper gear so I could drive it. So the it was time to fix.
