Been messing with an M5 Moline, the pto runs constantly... and has no brake in it...
Gotta shut it off to put the pto shaft on, and then it runs the machine after you start it in off position. What is wrong with it? warped disk plates? Shelled lining piled up? To heavy oil? Snaps in nice and crisp...and snaps out nice too, but it won't stop turning. Help! - Need parts diagram to see what I am dealing with and possibly a place to read how to repair assembly. Thanks... While I am asking about the PTO, I might as well ask if there's a complete 3pt assembly with dual remotes to put on this M5. Thanks, JC Edited by JC(WI) - 11 Sep 2016 at 8:20pm |

So it snaps on and off, but keeps spinning...If you have a load hooked to it does it keep turning that?
Reason I say that is grandpa's 4020 PTO always spins when it's disengaged, but it's not very fast, and you can stop it with your hand.

Creston, when the tractor is off, you can turn the pto by hand but is very stiff, when running, your not stopping it by hand.

Does it have a hydraulic clutch? The hydraulic pto clutch failing on an ih can do what you discribed. We had to replace the pto clutch in our ih 986 every few years when we used it hard on our chopper.

Mechanical over center clutch, but I don't know if there is suppose to be a brake on it.. If there is, it sure doesn't stop it.
I know on the 190 with hydraulic clutch, you don't want to grab hold of that while turning... gotta use the brake on it. |

our old VAC case always turned too while engine was running. it also had an in/out lever. when something was hooked to it, it wouldn't run the machine until you engaged the lever. but when nothing was hooked to it, it would still turn. was never a problem. was like that all the years we ran it (about 40 years).

I had a 670 Moline acted just like that. I hooked it up to a 20' bush hog and started it up. It turned the blades, started mowing, still turned, got in some heavy stuff and it stopped turning. Shoved the handle in and kept mowing. After that it would still drag some, but you could stop it with your foot if you needed to.
