On my newly restored C, I couldn't get the engine up to running RPM. So I took the governor apart and discovered the bushing in front of the grooved bushing was missing. So I assume that's the problem- nothing pushing against the fork to rev it up. Have one replacement bushing coming this week. Here's the problem: in working with it, the governor shaft shifted forward about a half inch, and now the cover won't go back on. I don't see how to back it into the housing without taking the whole front end apart down to the timing gear. Any advice from someone who's been down this road?
On my WD, I haven't changed tranny fluid in many (many) moons. Like never. So I decided I'd take that one on. The fill plug has a square head, appears as though a 5/8" wrench will work. Except that there is no clearance between the plug and the side rail. So I need a socket that works on a square head. Will a 12 point socket do the trick? If not, how do I get that loose (since it is firmly rusted in place)? Thanks!

You just need to remove the magneto. The drive slot is hitting on the drive lugs. No way to get it any other way and still be in time. After you have removed the magneto set the flywheel to TDC on the compression stroke. You then can set the governor gear back in with the drive slot horizontal. After the governor assembly is bolted back up you can back the engine up to or past the FIRE line and set the magneto with it ready to fire to number one plug. If you first remove all the spark plugs it will be easier to turn the engine over. Most but not all governor gears have a flat head screw behind the magneto to keep the gear from moving forward as yours has.

Some PB Blaster might help. I think you can use a 12 point socket on that plug 5/8 sounds about right. A 8 point would be much better.

12 point sockets made only for hex heads will take the corners off the square plug. They do make 12 point sockets specifically for both hex and square. They do make 8 point and 4 point sockets specifically for square. If not available locally, try www.mcmaster.com
