I have a tiller that came with a 712 I bought several years ago and have never mounted it. It's missing the drive belt and whatever it needs to lift it. Previous owner had rigged up a cable and pulley system to lft it. I wanted to put it on my 917 this spring but need to find the missing parts to do it correctly. As far as the belt goes the 917 says the part numbers on the underside of the hood and lists 2 options depending on tiller size so now my question is do I have a 36 or 38 inch tiller? It measures 38 inches from one side of hood to the other and 36 from tine to tine. And does anyone have the correct cable or rod it needs to raise it?

Does your 917 have the sleeve hitch on back, I'll try to get some pictures. There is like a an idler pulley set up that goes on the side of sleeve hitch that the belt runs on

Mine is called a 36" --- never saw a 38" Mine came with the 917,--worked good till the tines gave out, put new set of tines on it, ($225.) and 2 uses later the chain drive inside broke. Got new chains cut and put in , now cant get gasket, or hollow bolt that has the zerk in it. My pardner on MBN made me a bolt on his lathe, but the gasket is the problem so the tiller lays on the bench apart and I gave up on it and will probably toss it in the junk with the other allis stuff. The hitch is as said a sleeve hitch, AND I was told that the cable is special made for just that. --No room to put clamps for a homemade cable in there, in fact getting a new one in would be a bear.  Also was told that new ones are NLA and if you find old stock new one it's $ 110. I have no proof of this cost, but the info came from a reliable source.  If somebody could do a super good crimp on the right sleeve over the cable, I would think it should work.
The tiller has its own sleeve hitch, but I have another sleeve hitch for the brinly plow and cultivator that uses a sleeve hitch.
The tiller mounts with 2 lower pins after you slide the lift sleeve into the tube and flip the belt over the pulley, hook the tension spring and go. Not a biggie to mount. I never take my belt off the clutch pulley end, just tie it over the fender with a strap so its loose and use the 917 for other stuff. IF working the tiller does the best job of any tiller on the market. It turns the dirt into flower fine powder. really did a nice job.
If you need pix. of the hitch , mine is laying on the bench, so it wouldn't be hard to photo it.

I actually mounted it to the tractor the other day just to make sure I knew what I needed to make it work. The belt and cable are all I assume I need.

I found a replacement cable online. It was a direct replacement for the original. I'll have to get back home where i can post the part# I'm thinking it also fit a murray and some other models. The tough thing to find was the clevis from the sleeve hitch to the cable but one could be made easily. It has to be the right length. If it's too short it cause will cause the drive pulleys to contact the top of the tiller deck when it is raised.
I'll be able to give you the clevis measurements later as well.
Also if your 917 is a hydro you'll need a idler pulley kit that keeps the belt from hitting the hydro filter.

It is a hydro but the filter is mounted in the center just ahead of the rear end.

The idler pulley kit keeps the belt from the pto drive from rubbing on that filter.I'll post some pics of what you need when i get back to my tractors. Should be later today.

The simplicity number for cable is 1657563sm
Idler pulley bracket is 1671233asm
I'll post the part #"s for the pulley and the clevis when i get them.
I'll also post the length of the cable and the total length of cable with the clevis installed to help with setting the lift right.
The cable, pulley bracket and clevis could be made rather easy.
I found the cable cheaper somewhere by a cross reference to other manufacturers but i can't remember what else it fit. Will be searching for that too.
After reading your post again. It seems from your description like your hydro filter is one that is mounted out of the of the way and you won't need the idler kit.
I've included the idler kit info to hopefully help someone else on tiller mounting with the side mount filter.

Can someone show me how the cable is ran and mounted to the tractor. I'm assuming there needs to be a pulley or 2 for it the run on?

Great pictures. I have a 712H, and a tiller, but I am missing the idler pulley and the pulleys that go on the rear hitch. I only have one big pulley on the tiller, so I think I'm missing 3 or 4 pulleys all together. Anybody have any of those parts laying around they want to get rid of?
Thanks!

I'll post some pics of the cable path too.
It's not hard to route it. It runs down the center of the tractor, it turns downward running over a small pulley with a little guard around it and pins to the rockshaft under the bottom of the tractor.
I'll post all the lengths of cable and what you'll need to get it connected. It will be this weekend before i can.
The tape measure has holes in it for ventilation. It's hot here in florida. Need all the moving air we can get.
No really it's for use in the wind. It won't blow the tape around when you stretch it out hold it just right and the wind will whistle a tune for you...lol
I have no idea what they are for. Hopefully someone will fill us in on that.

The belt on mine measured 96in
I'm adding a few pics of the cable route.
Also the nut on the cable end should be jammed to the end of the clevis.

On this pic the top right of the pic shows the cable coming over the small pulley and attaching to the rockshaft
The pulley attaches between two ears above the rockshaft. The bottom of the pic is looking toward the rear. The rockshaft has two places to connect cables. The cable from the rear sleeve hitch attaches to the left side of the rockshaft looking at it from the rear. The attachment on the right side rockshaft would be for another attachment such as a mower deck

In the middle of this pic
You can see a little of the cable coming from the rear on left side towards the front.

[IMG]uploads/1434/20190526_115302-
The cable length was about 39 inches.
I think the part description gives the exact cable length

Length of clevis from end of cable to sleeve hitch.
