OK, I've been looking for a 'compact tractor with loader' for, well, months as the D-14 with 6' bucket is toooooo big just to move ponypoop and compost...
Not one but TWO ads pop up, both the 'other' orange and BOTH guys want $5500-$6000 for 40(yes, FORTY) year old 13 HP(when new) diesel tractors ! No dicker prices !!
Man, I must be getting cynical or something, cause there is NO way I'd pay that for BOTH of them ! Age alone HAS to put some 'wear and tear' on pumps, rubber, hoses....so.... I priced out EVERY bit of hydraulics I need to make one...engine,pump,fittings,cylinders,joystick valves and I'm UNDER 1500 Canucks...yeah...might be next month's 'project'. When I get the wooden version perfect, neighbour will supply, cut, weld all the steel to make it ! But first I gotta decide WHICH garden tractor will be 'transformed'....

OK, last year I saw a skid steer on a Friday, bought it that Saturday, cleaned it up on Sunday, blew a head gasget Monday, priced out parts and how-to-do-it Tuesday, put ad online Wednesday, resold with $900 loss on Thursday. Yup, less than a week big hole in my pocket so I learned.... also skidsteer will chew up my grass and gravel driveway waaaay too much !!

Hmm..smaller bucket could be an option as the Freeman loader from Rockton is sitting collecting dust for 5 years.I could 'borrow' that bucket....may be an option but...D-14 does chew up the ground kinda bad(OK, maybe it's the operator)...

but still a smaller machine would be easier to control, take longer, be more fun...

I also have all the cylinders to make a miniexcavator or small backhoe

sigh... if I procrastinate long enough I'll be dead....

Go buy a new compact, Kubota or Kioti. They are orange and have
6 year power train warranties. Sell all the old stuff that isn't working out.
I think the Kubota L2501,HST, 4wd with loader is about $20000USD. If that is too large, they have the B and BX. Nice to have a reliable chore machine, jump on, it will start.
What kind of operation are you running, sounds like you have fabrication capabilities.

re: BrianC...

hahaha, yeah that'd be nice..but I don't have 20K USD in my pockets ! don't have 2K. probably comes from not having a paycheck since '86.
I've got lots of 'stuff' around here ,just not a 'compact loader'. heck I've even offered to trade my tandem dump trailer for a loader. Founda a Case646 that would have worked but it got sold overnight for 4K !
Now I'm thinking I gotta build it,commit myself to the project before wife 'commits' me !

do you have Power Steering on the D14? That might help. And of course a smaller bucket.
Change the Hi-Lo power director to a Shuttle will be nice too.

yeah D-14 has PS, problem is space.too much stuff, tightly packed. smaller machine means less damage and easier on my body.
I even thought about a manure spreader for the garden but it'd be easier,as quick to just dump buckets ,here and there, then till in.
Once the weather breaks a bit and it's SAFE, I'll get the trip bucket and see what I need to do to get it onto the loader frame.
What I 'need' is 5 acres to spread all this 'stuff' out.....though I'd probably fill it up with new 'stuff' pretty fast....

Pick up a couple of the case 400 serries and build a 4 wd artulated out of it. Might end up a little longer then you want but I bet it is actually easier on the ground then the 646 and you can find old case 400 serries tractors with weak motors all over the place. The great part is you get a bunch of hydraulic control valves in the second tractor that become the aux hydraulics or in your case the loader hydraulics.   What you will find is that the small garden tractors with a loader are useless and won't turn unless you have enough weight to make them a wheelie machine without a load in the bucket.
So it is either build a custom front end or build a better machine. I think you will have a hard time finding anything smaller then the d14 that will be useful with a loader.
You can get a pasquali 988 make sure you have power steering in any pasquali and hope the motor is good because there is only one place to get parts in North America. But it will walk around in circles in places your d14 can't go I know I have one to clean a barn out with. But it had a weak motor and is now waiting for me to get the motor fixed. Won't lift the way my d15 will but will go in the barn alot easier. But the bottom line is realize that that smaller bucket isn't just size it is breaking force. It take alot of force to break up a mess in a barn.

Sounds like you need two loaders scoop and a pitchfork. Can be used in tight quarters and very fuel efficient.Get a very good set for under 100 Canucks

yeah 646.. I know a guy who has one, DOA, I borrowed it 2 years ago, fixed it, then he 'needed' it back PDQ , still sitting in the mud where it got dropped off....sigh.... last one here sold for 3800 canucks...too rich for me.
Just saw  'johnny bucket' on the web, downloaded the pictures. I do have a JD140H3 so that 'system' is possible.
Measureded the trip bucket, it's 40" ,so D-14 with it isn't a great option as smaller is a LOT easier to use here.
I did 'think' about taking 2 hydro units from riders, rotate 90* to build an articulated unit, think is the key here....works in the head, even tufftork says possible, but a LOT of effort.
options....gotta have options...

Jay do some searching on the case ingersoll artulated.   There is a great example of one built as a pickup on another side can't remember where off the top of my head. He used the steering knuckle out of a jeep I think for the artulated joint. I have a plan to build one but I need to do a dozen different more important things first. Yes you need to twist and rotate the joint but it has been done. Bottom line is anything will cost you time and money.

Actually I have just what you need an Aztec Tractor Loader built in Minn in the 60's
uses two military jeep rears,articulates,4WD,18HP Kohler motor,48" bucket, hydraulic
drive.Or you can find an old Case Davis trencher some had the loader attachment.

Just keep looking, although it sounds like you have been. Can you expand your search down to New York, or out to Michigan?  The "kid" down the road found a Kubota L2650 with loader and woods backhoe, $1600, only the clutch needed work. From a golf course.
Sometimes the smaller equipment goes for bigger bucks, like JD garden tractors with loaders for $6000.

So how do you get away with not having a paycheck since 1986?  You need to write an instructional book.

Jay, how often does it his job need done? Maybe going to town and renting a Dingo or such would work for ya. that 900.00 loss woulda paid a lot of rent.

I've done the rental thing in the past($200 a day), problem is I'd like to do it on MY time NOT the rental stores clock. I'd like to use it for 2-3 hrs at a time then 'things' always come up...usually when I'm trying to get something done for ME. It'd be like my forklift, wait until 2-3 jobs need to be done, do them, then it'll sit for 2-3 weeks.
I have looked around Holland,MI as I have a great contact there who can haul here but I ain't got no passport ! Also the Canuck really sucks..$4 CDN to $3 USDor worse...sigh.
I'll keep looking, maybe fab up a 'wooden mockup' of this johnny bucket scoop, at least the 140H3 has all the hydraulics plumbed, worse case is 300# of scrap steel to haul away.

Sounds like whatever you do your not going to be happy as the grass is your primary concern. You may want to just keep it simple and get a wheelbarrow with a pitchfork.
Thanks & God Bless

I had that problem 1 time about grass my father in law was pouring a sidewalk with quickrete he was 82 years old at the time his wife would not let him back the truck up to the project instead he had to carry each bag about 75 ft uphill! When I got there I asked him why he didn't have the truck close to the jobsite he said his wife wouldn't let him! I said give me the keys I'll take care of your problem then his wife said I don't anyone driving on my lawn! I said don't worry I'll drive on his half of the yard! That didn't go over well with her or my wife! I turned around and told her he is 82 years old still works every day so you can go out and spend his money she was 8 years younger than him I said he is trying to make you happy! I said don't be stupid grass grows back! I then told her in front of my wife that if my wife said something like that to me she knows that I would have the whole yard plowed up with my 6 bottom plow then she wouldn't have to worry about the grass! Her next words were OK you can back the truck up there! So I say to you about the grass get a load of limestone hauled in to turn on or sell the doggon pony's!

Actually the ponies are up the road, well really thay are race horses ($$$) that get fed real good, so the 'ponypoop' as I call it is $$ chit ! I haul it here in my dump trailer, make a big pile, then have to 'rearrange' it all before I plant the squash, cause where I dump IS the wife's squash growing area. Always seems to do REAL good!
The grass isn't a huge issue though 3 neighbours 'excess' water pours through and really 'softens' the sod, the D14 will leave 'sargent stripes' where ever it goes..then take 1/2 summer to disappear. Not the end of the World, but a small pain...
Currently fabbing up a wooden 'johnny bucket as the lst guy with a dead Case646 will not sell it.DOA, engine shot,?? hydraulics, 2 flat rears(40 yr old !)...oh well...onto plan G or H now. Once the wooden wonder works THEN I'll start cutting steel. It's far easier to make 'adjustments' in wood than steel, especially drilling holes.

Jay - just bought a not real pretty 1974 AC 720 with an Ark 700 loader - will lift 650# according to the literature.  Is only 2 wheel drive, so don't know if that would be an issue for you, but you were working with a 2 wheel drive with your D14. I will need a weight box on the rear, but will be a lot easier on our grass when I have to go over it than when I am forced to drive my 180 with loader over it!  (720 has very wide turf tires on it). Son in law is buying my 180, so it will stay in the family, at least.
