We are reassembling our son's 1947 WC that had a blown head gasket. I bought a head gasket replacement kit from Steiners and it appears that all the gaskets are there, however, The haed gasket looks to be a " less quality, " head gasket than was on it. This gasket does not have the metal-copper around the water holes in it. The old one did. I checked the Steiner site and it shows this head gasket in it. I checked the gasket set for the complete teardown and that gasket has the metal-copper around the water hole. Am I paranoid or is this a legit claim. WIsh I could post pictures for you to see the difference. Don't really want to have to tear this down again in the near future. Thanks for any help or comments.

Those head gaskes are out there but I wouldn't use one on any thing of mine. I like the metal firing ring.

I would get a head gasket from a vendor on this site, Tony's Tractors is a good one, or OK Tractor, the ones that come in the Clevite engine kits are best which most distributors can get

I bought this one from Stiners Tractor Parts here in MI. and they are very reputable. I am not sure if it is a case of different vendors for them or something else. I called them this am and there wasn't a tec in to talk to. I guess I will call tehm Mon. am to see what they say. If they can't get me the one like the original I will try else where. Meantime we have a couple of other things to finish up on it. Thanks. Roger

I would not us a head gasket without those copper rings at the water paseges. The Fel-Pro ones do have them as well as the metal fire rings. Yes you do have a legit concern!!

If you have the metal fire rings then just lay the gasket on the block, screw in four head bolts to keep the location, take a ball peen hammer and tap in the center of the holes that are needed to mark them and then cut or punch them out. A head gasket should have some metal mesh in the fiber which would/could make it a problem to try to cut the holes with the hammer against the block.

Dick sounds like the gasket he has dose have the holes in it but no copper rings around the holes for the water pasages. I have seen these cheap gaskets and will not use them.

The gasket sets that come direct from AGCO do not have netal rings atound the water holes. They would not be necessary for a good water seal. Water pressure cap around seven pounds. I keep new head gaskets on the shelf for the B's and C's and get them from Sandy Lake. Have for probly ten years and none have ever had metal rings around the water holes.

We put the head gasket on as it was. The old head gasket water passage holes were steped in size from large in the rear to medium in the middle to small in the front. I checked with NAPA and they showed me a picture of the NAPA gasket and it had the same size holes as the old and new one. We are about an hour away from getting it started and running again. We will watch it closely and check the temp to make sure it is cooling properly. If it gives us a problem we will check with Steiner Tractor parts where we got this kit. ( I actually called them today but there wasn't a Tec to talk to) We have to put the oil pan on with all the gaskets put oil in it and fill the radiator. Thanks for the help and info we will let you know how it goes.

Put it together this morning and put the oil pan on. What a pain that was. Now thw oil pan is leaking in the front. Going to have to pull the pan and redo the &*(^% gasket on the front in the round part. Ran good for a few min. We will see what happens.

Pulled the pan and found both front and rear gaskets down inside the pan. Have to clean and reseal the gaskets overnight. Hopefully tomorrow we can get it on and done. Have to take care of a radiator leak , but not that bad.

Ordered a new set of gaskets from Steiner and they woun't bee here till this weekend. Talked to an old AC Mechanic who said to not cut the end gaskets as they need to crush in place as the pan is tightened. He said to take the front motor mount out to help install the pan. I was hesitant to do this for the fear of the engine falling in the front. He said if it is bolted to the torquetube it will be fine for working on the engine. He also commented on the head gasket and said that if it is tourqued right it should be fine. We will see how it goes this weekend.
