I think the d17 is better looking.
Anyone care to explain why some 170's have the front axle "radius rods"
in front, some have them in back? Is it a gas/diesel config, model
year change over? Do they both have same wheelbase? Something
to consider or not?

When the hyd pump was moved to front, the steering was changed to accomadate a steering cylinder. Early tractors had the side pump and internal rack steering. HTH Tracy Martin

I love D17s, I have an early series I and a bar grill series I, a series II and a series IV. My favorite tractor is my series IV with factory 3pt, however for a working tractor I'd only consider a series IV D17 or else I'd go with the 170. The modern hydraulics are the only way to go.

Yup, hard to beat the economy of the Perkins.....not quite a smooth as the 262, but I have never ran more than 2 gallons an hour thru mine. I average close to $1000 in brushhogging or tilling per tank of fuel.

I like the get a tractor for each implement idea. You need a backup tractor. So get a 170 and 175. That would be like $12K add $4k for all new tires. That would be the most fun way I could think of spending $16K. Maybe get an easy to jump on and off tractor like a MF 35 for pulling the bale wagon, if you have to help pick up the bales. You could get a new JD 5065m for $35k.

PlayGun -- everyone has their favorite for one reason or another. what works for one will not please the next. so, maybe you should slow down a bit. you have had a couple of chances to buy already and do not know what to do. I farm with D17IV's and others and do not like the 170/175 as well for the reasons already mentioned. If I had not just bought a 220 and am looking at another very low houred D17IV, I would jump at Chris/CT's 175 to use as a extra tractor. It sounds like you won't be using it enough to break the bank buying gas and a gas engine is cheaper to work on if needed. I would not be afraid to buy from him by just calling and seeing more pictures if that is the type of tractor you want to start out with. also something else to further confuse you or not- the knocking sound on the primered d17 could very well be the traction booster lever could be set engaged all the time and you would be hearing the bypass. check to see if the lever is down or up. if up put it down and see if the noise goes away. that lever is the one closest to the steering wheel on the left side of the quadrant. in all reality, for what you have indicated you are going to do with a tractor, the earlier model d17 will work just fine. htp

Thanks Stever, I like the looks of the D-17, but some guys say the 170 is better, but I am just going to have to go with my gut. The 175 Chris has is really nice but it's too much tractor for me, I have a 170 right below the house for 2900 I could pick up and only drive 30 miles. I think I am just hung up on the D-17. I'm going to take a breather for a week or two and just go drive some tractors and get the feel for both. I am going to try and make it to Mark's this weekend, he offered for me to look at his collection. He has a 175 I can see up close as well as a D-17 and other nice AC's. I think I am just really excited and I am getting in too much of a hurry.
