Could anyone tell me whats the Transmission fluid capacity of my Allis 715B Backhoe and the location of the drain plug?
Last night I began to drain the Transmission from what looks like the Drain plug, but I got a very dark "Oil colored" fluid. I know it wasent moter oil, and I know it wasent gear oil. I am thinking it could be hydrolic fluid. It had the consistancy of transmission fluid (a little less viscous then hydrolic fluid) It dident smell or taste like transmission fluid though.
Could this just be very very old trans fluid. I know I have old fluid and it has some water in it because in cold weather the tractor will not move do to the water freezing i guess.
The reason why I thought / think thats the correct drain plug, is because i followed the dipstic - filler tube down, and that plug is on a small box on the transmission directly below it.

same here, since I have been building my house. I am now doing land scaping so I am just getting the backhoe ready again. Boy this machine was great doing all my logging road building excavation and log and beam lifting. I had a Manul but then I lost my Mom and my Dads ex wife moved in a destroyed and threw away all my stuff.

It is a separate box with just 4 speed , should be same as gear oil as used in any trany I believe or could use hy-tran as sub. 
 Now torque converter ahead of it uses Type A fluid . 
Somewhere on here is a few other 715 posts but many were before last update of site so not sure if they show up in search.

No I was looking for my old posts and stuff, the searches are gone.
I am taking about the fluid that is put in through the filler tube to the left of your oil dip stick. I beleive that calls for Type A ....but I di dont know how much. Do you use Hy Trans in it. I always used dexron to top off with no trouble?

That dipstick is for the torque converter , not transmission, use only TYPE A - ATF there. It is also the lube for the clutch pack for the FWD/REV clutches . .

This link says 4 qts transmission 5 gallons drive axel? how can that be? I was assuming "Transmission" they mean clutch packs and converter?

I have a set of manuals I'll sell.    The Small box in the drive line is the 4 speed Trans.- 3.5 qt.cap 90 wt. gear oil. The dip stick tube is to the forward & Reverse converter Shuttle- 2 gal.cap. Dextron auto.Trans.fluid.

The 715B has a separate rear axle system and between transmission and axle there is a drive shaft. , transmission id Borg Warner 4 speed, which couples to the clutch pack which is coupled to the torque converter . All bolted onto Perkins 4 cyl engine.

According to the service manual the torque converter/ forward-reverse transmission takes 3 gallons of ATF.  The 4 speed box takes 4 quarts of gear oil.  If you are changing the ATF in the front box you will know that you can not fully drain the torque converter so you will have to add less than 3 gallons of ATF to get it full.

Thnks guys.
I am located in Nothern VT I have never seen another 715B in person, and the closest I have seen any onlune in NY. I wonder how many they made. I assume out west closer to where there were made their are more. How did you guys get yours and where are you located? What do you do with them, Construction, Farming? I am a homeowner and use mine quite a bit in the summer months. I used it a lot building my house. Once my landasaping is done I still have a lot of ditching and things to do. I dont see my self ever getting rid of it really.

I bought mine from a JD dealer in Shakopee MN , was owned by the City of Shoreview MN before me , had 2000 hours on it when they traded it in for new JD.
 Bought it in 1988 - is a 1982 - AC715B-D.
One problem is the hydraulic pump can crack the timing cover as there is a lot of overhanging weight on that casting. I made a brace to run from bell housing to the back of the pump to hold it secure and support the pump. Think AC had a update for this also.
 I used a 1/2 X 2 piece of steel bolted to rear housing and running up to pump , then U clamp to secure that to pump fitting . I replaced the front timing cover that did have a crack in it. 
 Digmore Extenda hoe so I can dig to over 17' with the unit. 34" bucket. 
Most hoes in this area seem to have been sold to utility companies and municipalities as they had a lower price than Case or Ford at the time.

Bob says 2 Gal ATF and Calvin says 3? I wonder if difrent manuals say difrent info?

I found that the pump bols on mine losen up sometimes. I just tighten them. I might consider making a brace too. Mine is not an extenda hoe, but does have the same size bucket. I have chains on mine for traction. They make a huge difrence as well. My tires are fairly worn, and the chains were cheaper.

also, where did you find that timing cover when you had to replace it? sounds like a hard part to find nowadays.

I have discovered a couple neat things for parts when I had my starter go, and a hoe valve control lever joint wore out.
1. Te starter armature out of a JD 440 Sidder is an exact replacement for the one in the 715b starter
 
2. A Tirerod end off of an old lawn tractor (in my case off an old ford lawn tractor) Is a direct replacement for the hoe control lever joint. Same threads and everything.

From Perkins supplier, also the fuel pump was replaced with pump from Perkins supplier. 
 With the traction lock I have found there was enough power to both wheels to move even with worn tires.

Mine has plenty of power, and can easily spin the weels even with the diff locked. That was my problem, on wet mud / clay I would sink , spin and get stuck. once i put chains on I found I could go more places.

They are good strong machines.Used mine quite often until tires got worn out. They  will develope alot of slop in the swing cyl. trunions on the hoe if not greased often.Had a fellow who wanted it and I was done with it. I know of two 715 machines in my area. Manuals really come in handy.

I recently revived a 715 I got from a friends dad's estate. His dad was a collector of Allis stuff. I had the shuttle shift rebuilt and am now working on the hydraulic system before moving on to pins which are in rough shape. Shuttle fluid seems like it was right around one of the 2.5 gallon jugs. Trans 80-90 don't think was that much.
