Hello, going this weekend to look at a d17 diesel, dont know much about it, belongs to a friend of a co-worker. He says the head gasket is bad. I know this isnt much info but can anyone get me in the ballpark of value, assume it's in rough shape (I've seen some of this guy's other equipment) Thanks for the help. A.J.

A lot depends on the series...a Series I snap coupler around $1000, Series IV with factory 3pt $4K and up....

those motors can get very expensive to repair corectly. Most times the sleves sink into the block and causes the head gaskets to go bad

Even if it's a series IV with factory 3pt I'd think twice before I gave more than $2500 for it. You could wrap $3000 in the motor of one of those pretty easy. Voice of experience here, I've got a D19 D.

Yes sir if it has problems get it cheap. You can spend more than the tractor is worth if the engine needs a major OH.

Less than 10 years ago I watched 2 D17 diesels sell at a sale west of Chatfield. Both running and in original cloths. The guy had used them to farm with. One looked slightly better than the other but they sounded good. One sold for $1,800 and the other I think brought $2,000. I kick myself every time I think about them and wonder where they went. My Dad knew the owner but the name escapes me now. Actually I missed them selling cause I had gotten someone with a trailer at the sale to haul a plow and cultivator home and he wanted to get loaded right when they were about to sell the tractors. Stupid me didn't dare tell him to wait a bit. I would have for sure bought one of them.

Condition, condition, condition --- Consider also what you want to do with it, work it or restore it. Series I, II, & III are less expensive and can go for around $2000 - $ 3500. Series IV are more desired and can run up to $5500. If it only needs a head gasket and is otherwise in good condition should be some less. If as you suspect, more is wrong -- the value for me would drop significantly! Also, depends on hw far you have to go to get it and how badly you want it.
